JANUS PROJECT INFORMATION LOT SIZE: 4000 SF BUILDING SIZE: 2,800 SF LOCATION: SEATTLE, WA PROJECT TYPE: SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE

JANUS NARRATIVE This project renovated an early 20th Century Tudor residence on the north side of Queen Anne. The clients, with an infant daughter, and another on the way, desired a design solution that provided an additional bedroom, family room, powder room, play room, and two bathrooms; did not add on to the existing home; did not impact the character defining elements of the existing home; created crisp, modern living spaces; created a lower level that did not feel like a basement; and engaged the sweeping view to the north. The design solutions leave the traditional, street facing façade untouched, concealing the dramatic change to the interior and rear façade. Given the clients goals for cleanly detailed spaces oriented to the northern view of the Ship Canal, the rear façade of the existing house was blown open and replaced with an aperture that spans the entire width of the structure. This new façade responds to a complete reconfiguration of the living spaces that create a new bedroom, open living, and family sized entry space on the main floor, and a play room, family room and craft room on the lower floor. The rear façade, designed to respond to the newly configured living spaces, assumes its own character. The house, like the Roman god Janus, now has two faces. The front looks to the past and the rear looks to the future.
