Is there anything from the previous weeks that you would like to discuss further or update the group on? Share with your group any progress or positive steps you have taken so they can celebrate with you. When we stand on the brink of opportunity or disaster, God tells us . . . “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
(See also Deuteronomy 31:7, 23.)
When the disciples were on the brink of major change, Jesus told them . . . “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 When you stand on the brink of opportunity or disaster, what matters most . . . is not the difficulty of the ______________________ 500 sands drive, san jose ca 95125 | www.churchonthehill.com
but your recognition that God is _______________________________.
Jesus is here on earth because the Holy Spirit lives in Christians.
COMMUNITY GROUP QUESTIONS
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17
Before your group meets this week read the “Jesus Is Here” sections (pages 141-163) of Jesus is ____.
Whatever Jesus did for people throughout the Bible is what we can expect the Holy Spirit will do for us. When living on the brink makes you feel vulnerable, underqualified, insecure, or risk-averse, you are in a position to experience the power of Jesus being with you, so
Getting to Know You 1.
What is one of the biggest risks you have ever taken? Where would you fall on a “safe to risk-taker scale”?
2.
How would you express to someone who has no idea about the Holy Spirit, what it means that the Holy Spirit is with you?
3.
Judah Smith’s book talks about the importance of seeing yourself as “the one Jesus loves.” How do you feel Jesus sees you? How can your idea of how you are seen by Jesus influence your relationship with Him?
“Be Strong and Courageous.”
The Holy Spirit helps us by . . .
Re-calibrating us to the “True North” of truth. “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13
Teaching and recalling truth. “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:26
Giving peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” John 14:27
Convicting people as we speak about Jesus. “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.” John 15:26-27
Empowering change in people’s hearts. “When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.” John 16:8-11 THE MESSAGE
Making Jesus known. “He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me.” John 16:14 THE MESSAGE
Answering prayers. “Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” John 16:23-24
Into the Bible 4.
Read John 16:7. Why does Jesus say it is better to have the Holy Spirit than it is to have him physically present?
5.
Read Matthew 28:19-20. How is Jesus “with you always, to the end of the age”? What does that mean, and what was Jesus promising in this passage?
