Offer as many of the following activities as your time, facilities, resources, and leadership allow. You may want to lead one activity at a time. Or, offer two activities at once and allow half the kids to participate in each, then switch groups and repeat the activities.

“I Have a Message” is an activity that uses listening skills and following directions to introduce today’s Bible story. WHAT YOU NEED: “Places” Activity Page, white cardstock, and wall tape

WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Copy the Activity Pages onto the cardstock. Hang each picture on a wall in different areas of the room.
WHY IS JESUS SPECIAL?
BOTTOM LINE
During the Activity: Have the children stand around you and announce, “I have a message. We are going to the grocery store!” After you say the message, walk with the children over to the picture of the grocery store. Then announce, “I have a message. We are going to school!” Walk with the children to the picture of the school. Repeat with the remaining two pictures.

“Bow Match” is an activity that teaches color recognition and sorting while introducing the basic concept of today’s Bible story. WHAT YOU NEED: 5 gift bows in each of the following colors: blue, red, green, and silver/gray; and 4 pieces of construction paper in each of the following colors: blue, red, green, and silver/gray WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Place the construction paper in the activity area about two feet apart from each other. Place all the bows in a large pile next to the construction paper. During the Activity: Encourage the children to match the bows to the corresponding color of construction paper. When finished, take the bows off the paper and do it again!

WHAT YOU SAY: Before the Activity: “WOW! Look at the all of these bows! I see a lot of different colors! I see blue (hold up a blue bow), green (hold up a green bow), red (hold up a red bow), and gray (hold up the gray/silver bow).” During the Activity: “There are colored pieces of paper here too! Hmmm. It looks like the papers are the same colors as our bows! Can you help me match the bows to the same color paper? (Pause.) Awesome! We can lay the bows on top of the papers.” After the Activity: “Way to go! You did a great job matching the colors! We use bows to wrap gifts. Today in our Bible story, we are going to hear about the GREATEST gift of all!”

An activity that channels either a preschooler’s innate curiosity or desire to play dress up into a discussion of concepts crucial to the lesson.
WRAP IT UP
“Wrap It Up” is an activity that uses fine motor skills and teamwork to complete a task. WHAT YOU NEED: Several empty boxes with lids, several rolls of Christmas wrapping paper, scissors, and gift bows WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Cut the wrapping paper into sheets large enough to cover the boxes. Place the boxes, paper, and bows in the middle of the activity area.
BOTTOM LINE
During the Activity: Encourage the children to use the paper to “wrap” the boxes. (Tape is not necessary, as they can just wrap and unwrap and then wrap again.) Allow the children to place bows on top of the “wrapped” gifts.

That looks great!” After the Activity: “Your gifts are beautiful! Nice job! It’s fun to give and receive gifts on Christmas, but God gave us the GREATEST gift of all. Let’s get ready to head to hear our story and find out what that gift is!”

“Shout and Retell” is an activity that retells today’s Bible story while giving the children an active role during the story. WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Sit on the floor with all of the children. During the Activity: Tell the children that when they see you raise your hands in the air, they should shout, “A BABY IS COMING!” very loudly. Retell the story, and during certain times in the story, raise your hands, shout, “A BABY IS COMING!” and encourage the children to shout. After the Activity: Say the Bottom Line together.

MEMORY VERSE
WHAT YOU NEED: “Angel” and “Background” from the Activity Pages on the Website, white cardstock, light blue cardstock, medium-sized coffee filters or doilies, glue sticks, and scissors WHAT YOU DO: Before the Activity: Copy the “Angel” Activity Page onto the white cardstock. Each child needs one page. Copy the “Background” Activity Page onto the light blue cardstock. Cut out each angel along the dotted lines. Each child needs one angel. Cut the coffee filters or doilies in half. Each child needs one half of the filter or doily. During the Activity: Give each child a light blue Activity Page and half of a coffee filter or doily. Help the children glue the filter or doily onto the Activity Page with the straight edge facing down/on the bottom. Give each child an angel. Help the children glue the angel on top of the coffee filter. The filter or doily should look like the angel’s wings. After the Activity: Say the Bottom Line together.
