Newman and the NCAA On Sept. 1, 2008, Newman University became a full member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. Newman is the only private university in the state of Kansas that is a member of the NCAA. Newman was admitted to the NCAA in 2006 on a provisional basis, which is standard for all institutions that first enter the association. The transition process can take up to four years and includes orientation and training for faculty, staff, and administrators. Newman completed its process in only two years, and is now eligible for all NCAA intercollegiate competition, including postseason games and tournaments. Most Newman intercollegiate athletic teams are members of the Heartland Conference, a league of Division II faith-based institutions. Newman fields NCAA intercollegiate teams in both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis, as well as baseball, softball and women’s volleyball. Wrestling also competes as an NCAA independent. Newman also offers intercollegiate men’s and women’s bowling teams that compete in national conferences. Benefits of NCAA membership Joining the NCAA offers many benefits to Newman. The NCAA has stronger eligibility guidelines and promotes greater faculty athletic involvement at its member schools. The NCAA also provides Division II training and programming in such programs as
compliance, rules education, professional development and student-athlete leadership, which typically translates into graduation rates that are much higher than at other schools. Newman’s NCAA Division II status also increases the university’s visibility on a regional and national scale. National television networks such as CBS, CSTV, ESPN, ESPN 2, and ESPNU currently cover 10 Division II men’s and women’s national championships and playoffs. The NCAA also allows junior varsity programs, which increase opportunities for student-athletes, scholarships to attract quality participants and additional funds for generating operating expenses. A commitment to achievement Newman’s dedication to athletic excellence is mirrored by a commitment to academic achievement. At Newman, the student-athlete is a student first. Coaches work with students and faculty to ensure that players are meeting their educational requirements and personal academic goals. The university also provides a variety of academic support systems to help student-athletes reach their full academic potential. For the 2007-08 academic year, Newman student-athletes recorded a 3.225 combined Grade Point Average (GPA), the highest among the Heartland Conference’s athletics programs. Eighty-one out of 270 Newman student-athletes were named to Heartland Conference academic honor rolls.
