Jesus gives us the strength we need to do what God wants

Sermon Discussion Questions Week of May 8, 2016

Introduction Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Connect • What is something you are afraid of? Grow 1. Review Genesis 12: 1-3. God’s original promise to Abraham included a people, a place, and a purpose. What was each of these elements? 2. Read Joshua 1: 1-9. What is God’s promise to Joshua? 3. Specifically which element of God’s original promise (people, place, or purpose) is Joshua being told he’ll receive? 4. In order to be successful, what is Joshua told he must do? (v. 7-9) 5. Joshua was called to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. How would his role compare with the role Jesus plays in our life? 6. God knew it would be difficult for Joshua and the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, thus he gave them the keys to success. How do these instructions apply to our followership of Christ? 7. How did Joshua know if he was prosperous and successful? (v. 8) 8. How do we know if we are prosperous and successful? (v. 8) 9. What difficulties do you have or have you faced in receiving God’s promises? Honor Father God, the Old Testament whispers the story of Jesus. You promised Joshua a land for his people, and you promise us a home with you through Christ. As we search the scriptures, allow us to see the glory and wonder of how Christ is in all things.
