JULY 7, 2013

Yoshimichi Oohata of Tokyo — in California to attend the 40th anniversary celebration of Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries — on June 26 addressed a gathering of about 60 people at St. Mary's Church on Mariposa Avenue, Los Angeles' historically Japanese American congregation. Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, who was among more than 40 Angelenos who also attended the conference in San Francisco, said she invited Oohata to L.A. after the EAM gathering.“It was important to be there to celebrate 40 years of Asiamerica ministry, especially as we in the Diocese of Los Angeles have the most varied, active Asian congregations worshiping in their native languages of any other diocese,” Bruce said. Oohata regaled the gathering with personal stories, but his remarks also included the very serious challenges faced in post-earthquake Japan. The Diocese of Tokohu is one of 11 dioceses in the Nippon Sei Ko Kai (NSKK), the Anglican church in Japan, with 35 parishes and five chapels, representing about 5,000 congregants, 60 percent of whom are 70 years of age and older. The magnitude-9 earthquake struck off the coast on March 11, 2011, triggering a tsunami and killing and displacing thousands of people. It also heavily damaged Sendai Christ Church, the cathedral in the Diocese of Tokohu, an outlying region. Through interpreter Chikako Tsukada, the bishop noted that the damage impacted about 500 miles of coastline and took a devastating toll on families who lost loved ones. But the Diocese of Tokyo has pledged to help rebuild the cathedral and assist in a long-term recovery through a project titled “Let Us Walk Together.” Oohata is pictured above with a portrait of the late Canon John H. M. Yamazaki, a long-time rector of St. Mary’s. For more about the bishop’s visit, visit www.episcopalnews.com.

Loving whole heart By Diane Jardine Bruce

L

ong before I became an Episcopalian my best friend Boo (that’s her nickname) and I would send each other notes, always ending with “love you whole heart.” The same words are said as we end our phone calls or leave each other when we’ve been together. Through the years our favorite gifts to each other have been hearts of different kinds. As she helped design my bishop’s ring, those of you who have looked at it closely know that it is in the shape of a heart. It isn’t that shape because of my best friend, it is in the shape of a heart because of today’s collect. When I started attending the Episcopal Church in 1986 I fell in love with the Book of Common Prayer, and most especially the collects. The collect appointed for today has always been one of my favorites. What does it mean to be devoted to God with our whole heart and united to one another with pure affection? To me it is a re-

minder that our primary and most important relationship is with God, and all our other relationships are informed by our devotion to God. When our relationship with God is right, when we are devoted to God, we can’t help but hold love in our hearts for all around us -- God loves us unconditionally, and we are called to do the same. This isn’t always easy. We human beings are broken vessels, and sometimes it is hard to love those around us. At those moments I remind myself that Jesus never called us to like one another, but to love one another. We can and must love those around us just as God love us and them. My prayer life and ring is my daily reminder to love whole heart. What’s yours? ?
