WHAT IS USA HOCKEY’S AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT MODEL (ADM)? The ADM is USA Hockey’s nationwide player-development program for youth hockey associations. It’s based on age-appropriate, age-specific competition and training for boys and girls, beginning with their first steps onto the ice and carrying them through age 18 and beyond. The ADM places a heightened emphasis on skill development and long-term athlete development principles, providing a blueprint for the best possible youth hockey experience. Put simply, it’s doing what’s best for kids. HOW DOES THE ADM HELP PLAYERS REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL? First and foremost, by enhancing athleticism and emphasizing skill development. Through science and experience, we’ve learned that the world’s elite athletes were almost never early-age specialists. They enjoyed a variety of sports and activities. They climbed. They swam. They biked. In short, they were kids. The ADM lets kids be kids. It encourages them to have fun and it amplifies their all-around athleticism through programming developed by hockey experts, sport scientists and child development specialists. This programming lifts the lid off kids’ athletic potential, blending with science to create a full toolbox of athleticism. When they apply it to hockey, good things happen. When we complement it with age appropriate, age-specific skill training, good becomes great. You can learn more about the ADM

New to Hockey? Generally you would start out in a Learn to Skate or Learn to Play Hockey program, which should teach your child how to skate along with the basics of hockey. From there you would progress to either Mosquitoes or Mites (for kids 8 years old or younger) any child over 8 would need to progress to their age appropriate level. Hockey is based off of birth years, so for the 2016-17 season: Mite birth years 2008 and younger, Squirt birth years 2006 and 2007, Peewee birth years 2004 and 2005, Bantam birth years 2002 and 2003, and finally Midget birth years 1998 through 2001.

Learn to Skate/Learn to Play Hockey Learn to Skate / Learn to Play Hockey is an instructional program that runs in two 12 week periods over the hockey season. The first session starts in September and the second in January. Sessions are held once a week on Saturdays or Sundays. The goal of the program is to teach its participants the fundamentals of ice skating by letting them enjoy a playgroup environment that is safe, noncompetitive and encouraging enough to give children the confidence they need so they can skate and learn to play hockey. You may transfer to any hockey program at anytime during the season. Tuition will be moved and pro-rated for any transfers within any Junior Crusader Programs. Goalies In 2004 recognizing there was a lack of quality goalie training at all youth levels of hockey and combined with the short comings of having a single goalie coach for an entire program, a group of 4 Laker coaches developed a model for developing goalies that has become the model that all programs are judged. In the 10 years since then the program has received such praise as “the Best Goalie Program in the Country” from Mass Hockey and “the Lakers own the franchise on developing goalies” from USA Hockey. This program was built upon a few key principles. • • • • • •

A goalie coach on every team Teaching one system One set of terminology Monthly goalie clinics - where both goalies and coaches could learn one specific topic based on the time of year Email communications – to reinforce the teaching at the clinic Online repository of goalie articles for reference
