Lesson 1: Meet Ray and the Sunbeatables (continued) Puppet Show Script Note to Teacher: Before teaching this lesson, introduce students to the Ray’s World map provided in the Curriculum Materials Folder. Display the map while you teach this curriculum and refer to it during the lessons. Encourage students to explore destinations on the map. You can use the map for other learning purposes after completing the curriculum. Ray:
(Walks onstage to meet the students) Hello everyone! My name is Ray. How are you today?
Students:
(Respond)
Ray:
It’s so wonderful to meet you. I can’t wait to go on many adventures with you. We’re going to learn about being sun safe while traveling around the world! I’d like you to meet my friends, the Sunbeatables. We each have a superpower that helps protect our skin from the sun’s UV rays. UV rays are invisible rays from the sun that can burn and hurt your skin, so it’s important to protect our skin from the sun. Note: Explain what ‘protect’ means and relate it to protective behaviors that students are familiar with. For example, brushing their teeth protects their teeth and wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle protects their heads.
Ray:
The first Sunbeatable is Serena Sunscreen.
Serena:
(Serena flies in) Hello everyone! My superpower is sunscreen. You rub sunscreen on your skin from head to toe to help protect you from the sun! My superpower works best if you put sunscreen on before going outside. Don’t forget to reapply it since it can wash off when you are sweating or swimming. Make sure you ask a grown up for help! (Serena walks off)

Lesson 1: Meet Ray and the Sunbeatables (continued) Ray:
Thank you for telling us about sunscreen, Serena! Hey, I see Hanna Hat! (Hanna enters)
Hanna:
It’s me, Hanna! My superpower is hats! Extra wide hats will help protect your face, head, ears and neck from the sun. Don’t forget to wear a hat when you go outside! (Hanna walks off)
Ray:
I like to wear hats, especially when I am outside or going on a trip! Well, look who’s coming now…it’s Chloe Clothing! (Chloe walks in)
Chloe:
Hi! My name is Chloe and my superpower is clothing! I have clothes that can cover your skin to protect you from the sun. I have shirts with long sleeves and long shorts and pants that cover your legs. My clothes look great with sunglasses, which are Stefan’s superpower! (Chloe exits)
Stefan:
(Stefan floats in) Hello! My superpower is sunglasses, which help protect your eyes from the sun’s UV rays and look so cool! (Stefan leaves)
Ray:
Thanks, Stefan! Now I’ll tell you about my superpower! My superpower is shade. I wear a special cape that can help make shade anywhere I go. Shade helps protect our skin from the sun. Find shade outside and play in it! Do you know what shade is?
Students:
(Respond) Note: If students need help, provide examples of things that create shade, such as trees, umbrellas and buildings.
Ray:
I also have a magic watch that reminds me to be SUPER-protected from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM when shadows are shorter and the sun’s rays are strongest! Now that you have met all of my friends and have learned about all of our superpowers, are you ready to travel around the world and stay sun safe?
