Chief Story Teller – A New Position For Organizations Susan Fenner, Ph.D. When you were little, most likely one of your favorite things was to have someone tell you a story. You’d raptly wait for the end – the monster to be slain, the unlikely hero to save the day, the downtrodden girl to live happily ever after. And usually, there was a lesson to be learned. You may be years older, but I bet you still enjoy a good story. I just read an article where the lead-in was “Every company ought to have a Story Teller-In-Chief…” And it’s true. The value of stories goes beyond lulling someone to sleep (isn’t late-night TV filled with stories?) or getting people to sit still (wait – maybe there is a good use for stories today with adults). A good story in the workplace can be used in many ways. Share a vision or bring a mission statement alive. Herbert Hoover’s election slogan in 1928 during the Great Depression was, “A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.” A very visual dream for most people at the time. Sheryl Sandberg tells a powerful story of women and leadership in her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, with the phrase, “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” Each of these phrases began a story that brought home points made more relevant by individual stories people could relate to. Have a character say or do things you couldn’t get away with. If you can’t call someone out at a meeting, you can relate a story about what happens when people don’t work hard and live up to their potential. The point is made and you haven’t publically embarrassed the slacker. Use a personal experience to teach a lesson. The number one characteristic of a great leader is not knowhow or good communication skills, as you might expect. From surveys, it turns out it is showing vulnerabilities. By exposing your frailties or sharing experiences where you mucked up, people can relate to you, you have become one of them, and they can see that just maybe, they can rise to your level – or at least try. Inject humor into the situation. Laughter is a wonderful thing. It can reduce pain, put something into perspective, diffuse strong emotions, and bring people together. You don’t have to be a comedian to tell a International Association of Administrative Professionals
funny story. Some of the most amusing stories are things that have happened to you but had an unexpected ending. The best jokes told by professionals on stage are ones where we can imagine ourselves encountering the same event. What we thought was true or expected goes topsy turvy. And it’s been found that laughter is a universal emotion, across all cultures. Stirs the imagination; broadens thinking. One of my all-time favorite books, now in its 25th year, is A Whack On The Side Of The Head, by Roger von Oech. He provides lots of exercises that can kick-start creativity. Stories do the same thing. They allow you to see something in a new way and can realign your perspective. I have a wonderful neighbor who tells me stories about how she handles her grandkids when they get unruly. More used to dog training, I am enlightened at how common-sense and kind she is when she disciplines. My method might be more of a “whack on the side of the head” – taking license with Dr. von Oech’s book title. Passes down history. Since early cavemen (and women) sat around the fire, stories of memorable events or traditions have been passed down through the generations using story telling. Before writing was even a thought in someone’s head, information important to a group was shared through tales depicting the past. To this day, we do the same thing when parents talk about their childhood and what they learned looking back on it. So…do companies need to create a new position of Chief Story Teller? Maybe not, but everyone in the company ought to become a master story teller. If they would, you’d have one big team, with a common vision, learning from each other, using humor to handle conflict, being innovative, and learning from past successes and failures. What more could a CEO ask for? Susan Fenner, Ph.D. is the co-author of Making Your Message Memorable: Communicating through Stories, from AXZO Press, and Chief Learning Architect for Speakers you Need (SyN).

About Kaw C hapter
2013-2014 Member of Excellence info
The National Secretaries Association was organized in Topeka, Kansas, on February 11, 1942, at the Hotel Kansan. Responsible for beginning the organization were Hillary Bufton and Hillary Bufton, Jr., a father/son team, and George B. Turner, Kansas City, Missouri. After a few months, "Kaw" was selected as the name of the chapter because of the Kaw River bordering the north side of Topeka. As a result of many changes during the war, the group experienced much difficulty; but with willing spirit, Kaw Chapter survived. As the years passed by, progress continued, and in 1981, the name of the now international organization was changed to Professional Secretaries International (PSI). Times have changed and so have responsibilities. In 1998 the name was changed again to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
Revised to take effect for 2013-2014 IAAP Year In order to qualify as a 2013-2014 Member of Excellence, the criteria (except #1 and #5) must be met in the 2013-2014 IAAP year. You must meet 8 of the 11 criteria. Only criteria #6 is a mandatory requirement. Your member of Excellence application must be submitted online. If you do not have the ability to submit the form online please contact Tonia Nelson at
[email protected]. Revisions and clarifications to the criteria are identified by bold/underlined text.
The first inter-chapter meeting of the association was held in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1946 with about 200 members, 49 of which were voting delegates. There were 115 chapters in 1949 and Professional Secretaries Week was originated in 1952. In 1956 Miss Martha Holyoke was named first, and to date, the only honorary member of Kaw Chapter. She was a secretary at Merchants National Bank in Topeka for 51 years before retiring in 1947.
Revised Criteria as of July 1, 2013 A Member of Excellence will attain a minimum of 8 of the following 11 criteria: 1. Hold a current IAAP Certification (i.e. CAP as prescribed by the new curriculum.) 2. Download the Member of Excellence Commitment form; sign and date the form. 3. Actively participate in the IAAP web community forum discussions or write an article during the current fiscal year) (minimum 200 words), and have it published in an IAAP publication (chapter, division, or international level.) Recommending another author’s article does not qualify. 4. Attend at least one professional educational workshop, seminar, webinar, or conference (at least 60 minutes in length) and provide a short paragraph on how the training relates to your job or your role in IAAP. It can be an IAAP or non-IAAP workshop, seminar, or conference; however, it cannot be included in your calculations to meet the requirement of criterion #9. 5. Hold a degree from an accredited college or university, or complete a certificate program (a minimum of one year in length) from an accredited college or university, or hold a Microsoft certification earned within the last five years. 6. Pay membership dues on or before anniversary date. This criterion is a mandatory requirement. This mandatory requirement will be waived in the case of new members joining IAAP in the current IAAP fiscal year who want to work towards becoming a Member of Excellence. 7. Serve as a chapter, division, or international officer, committee chair, or committee member. Serve on an international subcommittee or task force. Serve on a college/university advisory board for the office administrative program. (Any one of the above) 8. Conduct a public career/workplace/profession related presentation, program or training at least 60 minutes in length. These meetings, programs, or events cannot include an event used to meet the requirement of criterion #4. 10. Recruit at least one new member. 11.
