YOUR CHINTZ DRAPERIES LILT IN A BREEZE. You blink, waking slowly. Did you leave the window open last night? The fabric blows across your face; you sweep it aside and wake with a start. Was that a leaf? Sitting up, you clutch the curtains—which you’d picked for their life-like, leafy pattern—but dark-green vines fall thick from your four-poster bed instead. I’m just imagining things, you tell yourself, and swing your legs over the bed. Damp grass startles your toes—now the carpet, too! Its floral design has burst real stems and leaves; its blue trim spurts a real stream, flowing across the wood floor toward the green-flocked wall that’s a now forest. If you’re Anodos, the hero of George MacDonald’s fantasy novel Phantastes (1858), you follow the stream into the forest. But you’re not Anodos. You’re you, in real life, and what MacDonald presents as a dream you may know as a nightmare.
