SANCTIFYING THE SHABBOS OVER A CUP OF WINE The Friday night Kiddush begins with an excerpt from Genesis 2:13 which describes how God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day (Shabbos). God made the Shabbos holy and separate from all other days of the week.

Va-y’chu-lu Ha-sha-ma-yeem v’ha-a-retz, v’chawl ts’va-am. Va-y’chal e-lo-heem ba-yom ha-sh’vee-ee, m’lach-to a-sher a-sa va-yeesh-bos ba-yom ha-sh’vee-ee, mee-kawl m’lach-to a-sher a-sa. Va-y’va-rech e-lo-heem es yom ha-sh’vee-ee, va-y’ka-deish o-so kee vo sha-vas mee-kawl m’lach-to a-sher ba-ra e-lo-heem la-a-sos.
It was evening and it was morning. The sixth day. The heavens and the earth and all their hosts were completed. God finished by the Seventh Day His work which He had done, and He rested on the Seventh Day from all His work which He had done. God blessed the Seventh Day and made it holy, for on it He rested from all His work which God created to function. The one who is leading Kiddush then makes the following blessing over wine, and all others respond, “Amen.”
!ַס ְב ִרי ָמ ָרנָ ן וְ ַר ָ ּבנָ ן וְ ַרבּ וֹ ַתי ָ ּברוּ� ַא ָּתה ה' ֱאל ֵֹהינוּ ֶמ ֶל� ָהעוֹ ָלם .בּ וֹ ֵרא ּ ְפ ִרי ַה ָג ֶּפן
Sav-ree ma-ra-nan ve-ra-ba-nan ve-ra-bo-sai! Ba-ruch a-tah, A-do-nai, E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ha-o-lam bo-rei p’ree ha-ga-fen. RESPOND: AMEN
Attention, gentlemen, rabbis, and my teachers! Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine. (Respond: Amen) Kiddush concludes with the following blessing that thanks God for giving us the Shabbos and for choosing us as His special nation. At the end of the blessing, all respond, “Amen.”

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who made us holy with His commandments, has desired us, and has given us, in love and goodwill, His holy Shabbos as a heritage, as a reminder of the Creation. It [Shabbos] is the first day of the holy festivals, commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. For You [God] have chosen us and sanctified us from among all the nations, and with love and goodwill given us Your holy Shabbos as a heritage. Blessed are You Lord, who makes the Shabbat holy. (Respond: Amen) When the blessings are complete, the one who led the blessings should drink at least 2 oz. of the wine or grape juice. The rest of the kiddush wine or grape juice is then distributed to everyone else to taste. Afterwards, everyone goes to wash their hands and recite the blessing of “Netilas Yadayim.” Be careful not to speak until after eating the challah. YOU ARE HERE
