The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum became the owners of 200 acres at Kilchis Point in stages. The original idea was to use the property to build a larger, more modern museum. A few years ago, a community survey showed that most people wanted the museum to stay in downtown Tillamook. The Museum Board then began exploring other possible uses for the land. It was decided that because of the diverse history and natural wonder at Kilchis Point, the best use of the public trust land would be to provide interpretive trails.

Many Thanks to our Granting Partners: Spirit Mountain Community Fund Ford Family Foundation Oregon Cultural Trust Oregon Community Foundation City of Tillamook Oregon Humanities Tillamook County Pioneer Association We would also like to thank the many individuals and businesses of Tillamook County who have donated both time and money to the success of Kilchis Point. The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum is committed to the preservation and interpretation of the North Oregon coast’s cultural heritage and to fostering appreciation, understanding and respect of the North Oregon coast’s environment.

Postcard of Kilchis Point, circa 1914.

Kilchis Point was the site of one of the largest Native American communities on the Oregon coast as well as the site of the first pioneer settlement in what would eventually become Tillamook County. Kilchis Point was also the location of Whitney Lumber Company and railroad development in the county as well as the place from which the original Morning Star was launched.

Kilchis Point Reserve

Interpretive Trails Trailhead located at the Corner of Spruce and Warren Streets in west Bay City, Oregon.

“…An area of Extreme Natural Beauty…”

Museum staff, volunteers and visitors have already identified hundreds of native flora and fauna on the site. Eventually there will be a trail system that connects the trailhead with the bay and the old logging road. This will be accomplished as funds are raised.

The Pioneer Museum has been hosting groups of children from Tillamook County schools to provide environmental, history and heritage education in an outdoor setting.

A group of local second grade children planted willows along Joe Champion Creek to improve salmon habitat.

In 2011, with funds from our granting partners, a parking area, driveway, benches and an informational kiosk were installed. Trails were roughly cut traveling from the parking area to Doty Creek. Additional trails and bridges over wetlands are planned for installation over the next several years. We have also established a program whereby you can sponsor a trail sign for $150. Please contact the Museum for more information.

Directions to the Trailhead at Kilchis Point: At the south end of Bay City in Tillamook County, turn west at the Habitat for Humanity Resale Store. Kilchis Point is located at the intersection of Warren and Spruce Streets.
