Some Truths About the Holy Spirit In general, we don’t value the Holy Spirit. But Jesus did: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all.” (John 6:63) This verse should be a freeing statement! Check this out… We are not able to live the Christian life on our own. Christ knew this.

If we are a believer, we have a coach… why don’t we listen?

If we are a believer, we have a coach… why don’t we listen?

Perhaps we have forgotten the Holy Spirit because we don’t think we need Him.

God gave us the Spirit so that we might change the world through His power. How do you think the church would look if we all began “running the plays”?

Theology of the Holy Spirit 101 What are some of the things we know about the Holy Spirit?

Theology of the Holy Spirit 101 What are some of the things we know about the Holy Spirit?

How should those truths start shaping the way we act?

Theology of the Holy Spirit 101 Francis Chan says… “We’re all capable of studying biblical truth in a way that makes us “smarter” but doesn’t affect anything in our lives. On the other hand, we also have the ability to study in such a way that our lives are never the same because of what we’ve learned. The end result of this study could be that you walk away knowing more about the Holy Spirit. Or it could be that you walk away knowing the Holy Spirit, showing the people around you a Spirit-filled life. Only a life lived in the power of the Holy Spirit can offer the world something better than what they have.”

Who the Spirit Is Attributes of the Holy Spirit… These may be familiar… if so, ponder the Spirit until you find yourself in awe of Him. The most amazing part of this whole thing is that the very Spirit we are studying is actually living inside of us - IF we are believers.

Who the Spirit Is

• Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? (4) While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."

Who the Spirit Is The Holy Spirit is God. He is not less than the Father or the Son; He is consistently presented as equal. • Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit How do you think this ought to change the way we relate to Him?

Who the Spirit Is

• 2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Who the Spirit Is The Holy Spirit is a person. Rather than using the Spirit as an energy boost or tapping into Him like an electric current, we actually talk to Him, relate to Him, cooperate with Him, and make ourselves available to Him. Give an example of how this difference between Person and thing should affect the way we live.

Who the Spirit Is

• Romans 8:27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Who the Spirit Is

• Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Who the Spirit Is The Holy Spirit is a person Who has emotions. We rarely think about the effect our sin has on God, but He is clearly saddened when we fail to honor Him as we ought. What happens when there is dis-unity and lack of love with other people? How should understanding that the Spirit can be grieved affect our attitudes toward sin?

Who the Spirit Is

• Zechariah 4:6 Then he said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.

Who the Spirit Is

• 1 Corinthians 2:10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

Who the Spirit Is

• Psalms 139:7-8 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? (8) If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

Who the Spirit Is The Holy Spirit is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-present. How do each of these truths affect the way we look to the Spirit?

Who the Spirit Is Keep in mind that you shouldn’t be trying to fully comprehend Him – you can’t! The point is not to completely understand God but to worship Him. What you learn about the Holy Spirit should lead you to value Him more and desire His active presence in your life.

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us For every item we go through, ask yourself “How is the Spirit working in this way in my everyday life? Or how might He do so?”

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us The Spirit helps us when we are in precarious situations and need to bear witness. • Mark 13:11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

• Luke 12:12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us The Counselor teaches and reminds us of what we need to know and remember. He is our comforter, our advisor, our encourager, and our strength. He guides us in the way we should go. • Psalms 143:10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! • Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us From the Spirit we receive power to be God’s witnesses to the ends of the earth. It is the Spirit who draws people to the gospel and believers closer to Jesus. • Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us By the power of the Spirit we put to death the misdeeds of the body. The Spirit sets us free from sin, which we cannot get rid of on our own. • Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us Through the Spirit we have received adoption as children, which leads us into intimacy with the Father, instead of a relationship based on fear and slavery. • Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" (16) The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us By the power of the Holy Spirit we abound with hope because our God is a God of hope, who fills His children with all joy and peace. • Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us As members of God’s kingdom community, each of us is given a manifestation of the Spirit in our lives for the purpose of the common good. We all have something to offer because of the Spirit. • 1 Corinthians 12:7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us We are able to take on the characteristics of God by the Holy Spirit. • Galatians 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (24) And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (25) If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

What the Holy Spirit Does In & Through Us The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. • Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. (27) And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

What if I don’t see these things in my life? It’s impossible for you to do these things on your own. That’s actually the point – it’s impossible for you, and that’s why God sent us the Spirit. If you want to see the Spirit working in your life, God tells us to ask Him and He will give us the Spirit. • Luke 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
