What is a theme in a piece of writing?

An idea that is developed throughout the piece of writing. There can be a number of themes in a piece of writing.

Summarising involves picking out the main details and putting them into a shorter version in your own words. Evaluating involves making a judgement on something and giving reasons for your judgement. 8
