BLI RECOMMENDATION Designed for mid-size to large workgroups, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M602dn proved highly reliable, breezing through BLI’s 112,500-impression test with no misfeeds and no service required. With a rated speed of 52 ppm, the unit proved itself up to the task of handling busy workgroup traffic by printing BLI’s job stream and sets of a 10-page document in simplex mode faster than many competitive models tested. A high memory capacity aids in job processing, while HP ePrint lets mobile users send jobs to the LaserJet Enterprise 600 M602dn; the optional ePrint Enterprise application allows for mobile printing from Blackberry and Palm devices. Compatibility with the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) helps achieve streamlined driver deployment. In addition, the UPD, Web Jetadmin and the embedded web server arm administrators with extensive tools to monitor and control output. On the “green” front, the unit includes standard automatic duplexing to reduce paper waste and a bevy of other environmental technologies that can lower TCO even more. And while supplies cost per page is competitive, the unit’s low purchase price and rich feature set contribute to its good overall value proposition. BLI highly recommends the LaserJet Enterprise 600 M602dn for environments with monthly print volumes of up to 10,000 impressions.

Lab Test Summary
HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 M602dn
STRENGTHS • • • • • • • •
Highly reliable—flawless durability performance Lower than average purchase price ePrint functionality allows mobile users to send print jobs to the unit; consistent firmware code across product line enable easier upgrades Flexible/robust Web Jetadmin makes management of mixed hardware on the network easy Compatible with UPD Standard automatic duplexing contributes to less paper waste; bevy of environmental-driven features can help lower TCO Dark text, consistent line art, broad grayscale range, and smooth transitions from light to dark shades in black-and-white photos Fast running speed when printing BLI’s job stream; fast first-print times for TIFF and PowerPoint test files, as well as from overnight sleep; fast multi-set speed in simplex mode • High RAM capacity; optional finishers available • Simple routine maintenance procedures • Average tested toner yield exceeded the declared specifications
Reliability • The unit is certified highly reliable by BLI, completing a 112,500-impression durability test with nary a misfeed and no service required. Print Quality • Characters had above-average darkness and closely spaced fine lines remained distinct. No overspray was visible around text or line art. Grayscale was produced over a broad range with distinct separation between all levels, while coverage with halftone levels had no banding. Print Productivity • Running speed when printing BLI’s job stream, which simulates typical traffic in a workgroup, is faster than average compared with legal-size laser/ LED printers in this class tested to date. • Running speed when printing sets in simplex mode is faster than average. • First-print times for the TIFF and PowerPoint test files are faster than average. • First-page time from overnight sleep is much faster than average. Economy • The unit is priced lower than average for similarly equipped legal-size laser/LED printers in this class. • BLI believes that the unit is a very good overall value due to its strong feature set that can, most notably, help save money in a variety of ways. Ease of Use • The top drawer (up to A4 media) and lower (up to legal-size paper) drawer are easy to adjust; the length guide slides and the width guides move in sync once the requisite tabs have been pressed. The second drawer has a spring-loaded ramp, but it automatically goes down when the drawer is opened; with no corner separators or anything else that could make the process difficult, loading media is a snap. • Clearing misfeeds from any of the three access areas is easy. Consumables aren’t exposed, nor do they need to be removed. Text instructions, accompanied by a graphical depiction of the unit, are available on the LCD. • Replacing the print cartridge, which includes toner and the drum, is clean. Users open the front cover and can then simply pull out the spent cartridge and insert the new one. Step-by-step instructions are displayed on the LCD and illustrations on the inside of the cover provide guidance, should it be required. Feature Set • ePrint functionality enables printing from smartphones and tablet PCs by e-mailing documents to the unit, which BLI believes is a strong feature in today’s mobile business world. • Optional ePrint Enterprise allows users to print from Palm and Blackberry devices to any printer on the same network. • Because the unit is built on the manufacturer’s OXPd platform, administrators can, via the embedded web server, install solutions—for document management, security, for instance—developed by HP and third parties. • Organizations can purchase components in the HP Access Control suite, which can be utilized to limit or prohibit usage by individual or group, configure print policies, and implement secure pull printing. • HP FutureSmart provides consistent firmware code across the manufacturer’s current line of devices, resulting in simpler upgrades to expand product functionality and extend its life. • Standard automatic duplexing contributes to less paper waste. • Users can configure the unit to automatically go into or wake up from sleep mode at specified times. • HP Auto-On/Auto-Off technology can lower energy consumption to 1 watt in sleep mode, while Instant-on technology requires less energy to reach fusing temperature, helping achieve faster first-print times and environmental savings. • Standard and maximum memory capacities of 512 MB and 1 GB, respectively, are among the highest of legal-size laser/LED printers in this class; maximum paper capacity of 3,600 sheets is above average. • Finishing options include a 500-sheet stacker, a 500-sheet stapler-stacker and a 500-sheet 5-bin mailbox. Administrative Utilities • Web Jetadmin allows for management of a fleet of mixed hardware. Administrators can simultaneously configure and diagnose multiple devices, set up alert notifications, enforce duplexing, and establish when devices should enter energy-save mode. Also, because the utility integrates with Microsoft Active Directory, administrators don’t have to perform an IP broadcast to find devices on the network as it does so automatically. Web Jetadmin integrates with HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli, and Computer Associates Unicenter, too. 2
