It was a must-win game featuring two overtimes, an unlikely hero sinking a half-court buzzer beater and an injury leading to a game-winning sub. Saturday’s TAMIU men’s basketball game really did have a bit of everything. In a double-overtime thriller, the Dustdevils outlasted the Heartland Conference’s co-leader in Arkansas-Fort Smith for a critical 61-60 victory at home. The Dustdevils trailed 60-58 with 13.8 seconds remaining before junior Johnel Gray hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left. Fort Smith argued for a foul during its next possession after driving as the ball went out of bounds, but had to settle with the referees awarding them possession with 0.4 seconds after looking at the monitors and saying the ball was out with time remaining. Forward Jayvin Reynolds deflected the pass attempt in and sealed the victory. Gray’s heroics were only made possible by a spectacular finish in regulation. After TAMIU led 45-40 with 4:10 left, the Lions scored eight unanswered to pull ahead with under a minute to go. Guard Felipe Vezaro missed a 3-point attempt with time running out and Fort Smith went to the line ahead 50-47 with just five seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Historic Start
TAMIU continued its best start in program history Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader over Arlington Baptist College winning 7-4 and 6-1 at Uni-Trade Stadium. The pair of wins lifts the Dustdevils to 8-0 as TAMIU prepares to return to conference play this weekend with a trip to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. The Dustdevils used 11 total pitchers in the doubleheader with Ryan Williams picking up the game one win and Abe Almonte taking the game two decision. Alvaro Rondon went 2-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base in the opener, while Hector Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Rick Alanis was 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a team best two RBI. Gonzalez, Salas, and Garcia each added a pair of hits with Salas also contributing an RBI. Up next the Dustdevils will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith to battle the Lions. UAFS has accumulated a 3-3 record to start the season, but is coming off a 2-1 series win over no. 1 St. Mary’s University. The Dustdevils and the Lions will get their series underway on Friday at 1 p.m.
Lady Dustdevils Take Giant Leap To stay in the race for the fourth and final spot in the Heartland Conference tournament race, the Texas A&M women’s basketball team had to do something it’s never done before — beat Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Dustdevils did just that on Saturday, grabbing their biggest win of the season, 61-45, over UAFS. The Dustdevils will prepare for a Thursday game at McMurry at 5:30 p.m., which will not count towards the team’s conference record, before a potentially pivotal game in Austin against St. Edward’s Saturday at 2 p.m.

PUT ME IN COACH I’M READY TO PLAY Just like the popular sport song “Centerfield,” all student-athletes want to get into the game and be that one special person who makes the difference between success and failure. Every coach also wants student-athletes on his or her team who think like that and “believe.” The reality of life is that everyone has a role to play that is important to the success of the group. A young man or a young women athlete who may not have yet developed to his or her potential at the same level as other team members still has an important role on the team, until such time they too are at the peak of perfection. I always tell the story that the best point guard I ever coached was a young man who walked onto my team, without scholarship, and was never recruited by a single college coach. In four short years he went from an average player to First Team AllConference. He knew the role on the team and in life each of his four years until he reached his peak. Today he is a well respected physician in the Northwest. Every student-athlete has that potential. All that is necessary is for each person to understand their role at any given time in life and be the best they can be for themselves and for the group. Go Dustdevils!
