UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA BASKETBALL

2009-2010—Ospreys are NCAA Eligible! After a long four-year transition process from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I, the Ospreys of the University of North Florida enter the 2009-2010 season fully eligible for both the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament and the NCAA tournament. Over the last four years, head coach Mary Tappmeyer has steered her team through the arduous transition and has the Ospreys poised to make a run for the tournament in March 2010. Over the course of the last four seasons, the UNF basketball team would have qualified for every Atlantic Sun Conference tournament had they been eligible. However, due to NCAA reclassification rules, the Ospreys were not allowed to compete in the post-season. Coach Tappmeyer and her staff are eagerly looking forward to the 2009-2010 season. The Ospreys return a very solid back-court tandem of sophomore point guard Brittany Kirkland (Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team) and flashy combo guard, junior Juliemay Syquio. Tappmeyer also returns redshirt freshman Jadhken Kerr, who was forced to redshirt after only playing in seven games last year. During those games she led the team in scoring. In addition to the aforementioned players, seniors Shennette Sheffield and Arlande Cherizol will provide valuable leadership in the post. Cherizol finished the 2008-09 year in a strong fashion and brings explosive athleticism to the post position. Sheffield will be counted on to provide solid defense and leadership to the squad. In addition, guard Kim Baker and forwards Kayla Mobley and Rachelle Rasley all return this year with a season of experience under their belts. Fans who look at this year’s roster will notice several new faces: freshman Dori Lansbach, a 5’8 combo guard, from Traverse City, MI will compete for playing time at the guard spot and brings a tremendous work ethic, excellent fundamentals and outside shooting to the squad. Junior college transfer DeAdria Hilliard is a slim, athletic guard who can shoot the three or
slash to the basket. Junior forward Margaret Bell, a 5’10 transfer from Shelton State Community College in Alabama brings a scoring presence to the paint for the Ospreys and has a knack for creating shots for herself. She will have three years of eligibility remaining. 6’2 freshman, Larkira Jones, has also had a good fall and is a strong, athletic post presence inside. Two additional new faces that will practice with the team but cannot play this season due to NCAA transfer rules are junior forward Jadhon Kerr, older sister of Jadhken and transfer from Wichita State and sophomore forward Taylor Smith, a Florida native and transfer from Monmouth University. The Ospreys will be quickly tested by a brutal non-conference schedule that pits them against major-conference opponents Florida State University (Nov. 13), University of Pittsburgh (Nov. 17), University of South Florida (Nov. 21), Wake Forest (Dec. 14) and the University of Miami (Dec. 31). Coach Tappmeyer hopes this challenging non-conference schedule will help prepare the team for an Atlantic Sun conference that is strong from top to bottom. UNF opens its ASUN schedule very early in the year when it travels to Campbell University on November 27th and then to ETSU on Dec. 5. UNF split the head-to-head series against both Campbell and ETSU last year, with each team winning on their home floor. For the first time in program history, all the returners from the 2008-09 squad and four of the six newcomers spent the summer at UNF taking classes and working with Joe Collins, Strength Coach. The team returned in the fall with a very good strength base. The Lady Ospreys will officially begin practice on Friday, October 16th and will host Brewton Parker College in an exhibition game on October 31st before concluding their exhibition schedule with a closed scrimmage against the the University of Florida Gators in Gainesville on November 7th.

“courtside” chat with coach t. Q: After the four-year transition process as UNF reclassified to NCAA Division I, 2009-2010 will be the first year you are eligible to compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament as well as the NCAA tournament. Discuss your excitement about this upcoming season: A: The transition was very difficult and you don’t realize how difficult it will be until you are in the middle of it. I think knowing what the last day of each season was over the last four years and knowing we couldn’t compete in the post-season was very challenging. Recruiting at the Division I level is also accelerated and we had to do some “catching-up” in terms of the recruitment process. Q: You scheduled a very difficult non-conference schedule that includes three ACC teams and two Big East teams. Why do you schedule such tough opponents? A: Scheduling top-notch opponents is just something we have to do to improve our program. We have to keep the non-conference schedule in perspective. The early-season opponents help prepare our team for conference and they enter conference knowing that they have played some of the toughest opponents in major conferences in the country. FSU and Pittsburgh both went to the NCAA tournament and Pitt advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. USF also won the WNIT. Our team is very competitive and relishes the chance to play these high-quality teams. Q: You are entering your 19th season as head coach of the Lady Ospreys and have been the only head coach in the history of the program. Discuss your tenure at UNF. A: Some people might question why I have stayed at UNF for so many years, but just as we reached the height of our success at the Division II level, UNF handed me the challenge of moving the program to the highest level. Having the opportunity to start the program from scratch, lead it through its infancy as a Division II program and then through the four-year transition, has been a unique experience. Oh, and I absolutely love it here! Why would I want to leave? Q: UNF and its athletic program is known for recruiting high-quality student-athletes and you are known for your commitment to education. Why is this so important to you? A: Education has ALWAYS been important to me. The players at our level probably aren’t going to play professionally; therefore their degrees are essential to their success as an adult. Education needs to be a priority and we are very proud of the academic success of the players. Over half of the team was been named to the Atlantic Sun Academic Honor roll last year.
