Learning from a Fortune 500 company Last week Mark Hollowell and I had the opportunity to travel to Kansas City to spend three days learning from the individuals at INTL FC-Stone. INTL FCStone is a Fortune 500 company that specializes in financial services, market guidance and risk management. During our time there we were able to see firsthand the services that INTL FC-Stone provides the Flagler Coop Association. FCStone provides hedging capabilities to our company, allowing us to better manage the risk for our customers in the often volatile grain and fuel markets. Being both
a Futures Commission Merchant as well as a clearinghouse, FC-Stone can complete any futures or overthe-counter trade needed by us at the Flagler Coop. Market guidance is another major service that INTL FC-Stone provides to us at Flagler Coop. Mark and I got to see in detail the major factors that go into driving the grain and fuel markets. As in the case of wheat the past couple months, supply, demand, weather and politics have all played a part in keeping prices depressed. While we were in Kansas City the USDA Crop Report came out showing carryout dropping slightly for wheat.

Despite many challenges, we were able to report net savings before tax of $722,596 on sales of $40,094,722. This was an improvement over the drought-reduced returns we experienced the year before and leaves us optimistic about our current fiscal year.

Gear up your feed program for spring The days are getting longer, the temperatures are warming up, and baby animals are beginning to adorn the scenery of the eastern plains! In the feedmill we are gearing up for a busy spring season. • Mighty Minerals: As the grass greens up and forage quality improves, remember that minerals are still vitally imperative in maintaining the health of your herd. Whether or not this will rally the market to any noticeable degree we will have to wait and see. Overall, I enjoyed my time at FC-Stone getting to see how grain is sold and bought throughout the United States. Being a farmer myself, and being involved in the production side of agriculture, it was nice to see the pieces involved in making grain flow from producer
