LAND SURVEYOR (LICENSED) #LegalSurveyor #PropertySurveyor #CommissionedLandSurveyor Land Surveying is one of the oldest professions in the world. The first land surveys on record were completed nearly 3,000 years ago when Egyptian Land Surveyors subdivided the fertile land around the Nile River. The Land Surveyors were also tasked with re-marking the land after the annual flooding of the Nile River. Today Land Surveyors (Licensed) in the oil and gas industry plan, direct and conduct legal surveys to determine and interpret the location of boundaries, buildings, structures and other features. You’re known for being accurate. If this sounds like you, look into a career as a Licensed Land Surveyor.
HOW DO I GET HERE? Prior to licensing, Land Surveyors must have a degree in geomatics engineering or survey engineering. A college diploma in survey science or geomatics technology along with additional academic credits may be acceptable. Successful completion of licensing exams and a 1 to 3-year articling period are required to attain a professional surveyor’s license.
What does this career look like? When it comes to land ownership, you draw the line. Working closely with engineers, architects and land-related professionals, they use your data to calculate precise measurements for engineering, map making, land evaluation or construction. As a Licensed Land Surveyor you work primarily in the office with managerial and planning duties, though you’re familiar with working in the field—from suits to boots. While you spend a large portion of time in an office researching, planning and directing survey team and creating final reports, you also spend some time outdoors providing oversight to collecting information. The final land descriptions, reports and maps you create are usually considered legally binding. You may be asked to present your findings in a courtroom, or present to executives to inform company decisions.

What would I do? Once you’re licenced, you spend more time reading through legislation, bylaws, and engineering documents than you spend in the field calculating coordinates. Your duties may include: Researching legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed. Calculating heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain. Determining longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas, using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS). Developing criteria for survey methods and procedures. Preparing and maintaining sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed. Coordinating findings with the work of engineering and architectural personnel, clients, and others concerned with projects. Managing field crews in the collection and calculation of data. Mentoring staff on proper survey methodologies and techniques.
