Port Blakely Tree Farms Celebrates 150 years
If you are looking for an amazing story of long vision, sustained effort and community spirit, look no further than the story of Port Blakely Tree Farms. This year the company celebrates 150 years as part of their communities in western Washington and western Oregon with expanded operations as far afield as the South Island of New Zealand, half a world away. Regardless of how far afield they expand, this family owned company remembers its roots. As part of its 150 year celebration, Port Blakely Tree Farms has decided to establish scholarships for students of Washington and Oregon’s tree farming families who are entering a natural resource program at a post-secondary institution. Port Blakely has asked WFFA to help with the organization of this amazing gift in support of our tree farming youth! We are in the preliminary planning stages so stay tuned in future Landowner News for the full roll-out of this program. This is but one of many gifts that Port Blakely offers to WFFA. They have been generous supporters during our patron program drive for more than a decade now and lead the way in demonstrating how it is ‘Cool to be a Tree Farmer’ to members of our communities, young and old. While they may be old, there are no dry and dusty elements to their story – just interesting tools and innovative ideas that capture the imagination of youth and tell the story of forest sustainability. My favorite is the one-of-a kind diameter tape that helps kids visualize how much carbon is stored in that tree they are measuring relative to the number of bus trips to school that year or that trip to Disney World. Now, that is cool! Please join your state officers and staff in wishing a very big Happy 150th Birthday to Port Blakely Tree Farms. And if you have the opportunity, thank all their great people for the wonderful inspiration they provide to tree farmers and the community at large.
