GOVERNORS’ ANTI-BULLYING POLICY 1. Rationale
1.1.
Langtree School believes that all staff and students have the right to go about their normal lives free from fear and intimidation. This policy relates to all members of the school community including staff, students, governors and visitors in order to ensure their wellbeing while in school.
1.2.
Langtree School defines bullying as behaviour which is deliberately intended to cause hurt, distress, unhappiness or embarrassment to others, which is repeated over a period of time, and where it is difficult for those who are being bullied to defend themselves.
1.3.
Bullying can be: - physical (hitting, pushing, shoving, theft) - verbal (name calling, racist remarks) - cyber-bullying (use of the internet, social networking sites, text messages, voicemail to cause upset and distress) - indirect (spreading rumours, leaving people out, supporting other people who bully) - extortion: money/gifts/doing homework - sexual: unwanted physical contact and abusive comments
1.4.
Langtree School is against all forms of harassment, discrimination and intolerance. We believe that racial harassment, when someone is bullied because of his or her colour, nationality or accent, is unacceptable and this will not be tolerated in our school.
1.5.
Sexual harassment, the bullying of girls by boys or boys by girls, is also unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school.
2. Aims
2.1.
To ensure that all stakeholders in Langtree School are treated fairly and with respect.
2.2.
To ensure that Langtree School is a good place in which to learn and be happy.
2.3.
To ensure that Langtree School is a safe and secure environment in which all can thrive.
2.4.
An essential ingredient of the policy must be to ensure good supervision at break times and lunch times.
2.5.
To ensure that all students are encouraged to reflect upon and act upon our core school values of courtesy, tolerance and respect in all interactions with all other members of the school community.
3. Policy Detail Procedures for dealing with bullying at Langtree School
3.1.
Each tutor group will have a supply of yellow student incident report form.
3.2.
If a student experiences bullying he/she will fill in a yellow student incident report form or report this via no bully zone or approach an antibullying ambassador or give it to their tutor.
3.3.
If a member of staff witnesses a bullying incident they must log the incident in SIMS and inform via SIMS message tutor, Head of Year and Student Counsellor.
3.4
The alleged victim’s tutor will investigate the incident and inform the alleged bully’s tutor.
3.5
When the tutor has received two bullying slips for the same student indicating a bully or a victim, the situation will be referred to the Head of School who may write to the bully’s parents and where appropriate the victim’s parents; and also decide on appropriate action. For example: o Impose a sanction against the bully or bullies o Two lunchtime detentions where the bully attends an anti-bullying workshop to educate them on the impact that their behaviour has had on others, using a restorative approach to build empathy skills. o If necessary, provide a safe haven during school hours for the victim, and try to provide a friendship group/peer support. o If appropriate, advice will be requested from the relevant person (e.g. School Counsellor, Behaviour Support Teacher, Hub or other outside agencies) as to the best way of supporting the pupil and monitoring the situation.
3.6
The Head of Year will then decide on appropriate action: o Issue a verbal warning to the bully or bullies. o Make all staff aware of the victim’s potential vulnerability. o Obtain an apology from bully to victim. o Organise a restorative enquiry if appropriate to do so.
3.7.
If the bullying persists, the Head of School will refer the matter to the Assistant Head Teacher for Student Services.
3.8.
The Assistant Head Teacher will invite parents of the bully or bullies and victims into school separately to talk about the bullying.
3.9
Further bullying could result in the following sanctions for the bully or bullies: o Isolation o Referral to the Head Teacher, where a warning or possible exclusion could take place. o Outside agencies, if appropriate, may be used such as Oxfordshire Hub, Youth Justice team, PCAMHS
3.10
The Student Counsellor will keep a record of any bullying incident slips, which will be updated regularly, so that the school can refer back to previous reports to identify any repeat patterns of behaviour and relationship problems. In line with LEA policy, a racial incident log will be kept in the school office and all incidents of racial abuse and of bullying must be reported to the Assistant Headteacher for Student Services who will then enter the incident in the log. This is a statutory requirement and it is our obligation as a school to record every single incident in this way. All cases of racial or homophobic bullying incidents are recorded as a case study by the student councillor.
