LAST-MINUTE HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS By: Brittany Nicole La Hue Halloween is just around the corner, and most party stores are down to slim pickings. If you haven’t picked out a costume yet, don’t worry – you’re just going to have to get creative! There are plenty of places in West Hollywood to put together the perfect Halloween costume. Read below for some ideas and feel free to design your own!

Cowboy/Cowgirl A costume where you can look cool and feel comfy at the same time! Head to H&M for some affordable plaid shirts and jeans – not only will they be a great costume, but you’ll be sure to find something you want to wear over and over again. Then make a trip to Boot Star on Sunset Boulevard for some authentic cowboy boots to top off the look! Here you’ll find men’s and women’s boots in every color and pattern, and in various lengths from ankle booties to ones that go all the way up the calf. You can even pick up an authentic cowboy hat at Boot Star (but sadly, not a horse).

Hippie When you want to feel the peace and love, visit J. Gerard Design Studio and Peace Gallery. Designer Julia Gerard is known for her extensive collection of peace sign jewelry. From necklaces with one giant peace sign to ones with tiny crystal ones, to earrings and bracelets, a piece from this studio will complete any 70s or hippie-inspired Halloween costume. Better yet, her pieces are so exquisite that you’ll want to wear them again (over a more tame outfit).

The Great Gatsby Hollywood is still buzzing over this summer’s remake of The Great Gatsby. And why not? The fashions of the 1920s were so fun and glamorous. Need a good couple’s costume? It’ll be easy to recreate the perfect Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan costume in West Hollywood. Ladies can make a stop to boutiques such as Nicole Miller and BCBG Max Azria, both of which are known for having shiny, sparkly, sequin-emblazoned dresses. You may not be able to find a legitimate flapper dress, but pairing a shiny dress with a glittery, feathery headband will help bring the costume home. Men can invest in a great suit from Hugo Boss that they will want to wear again and again. From pants to jacket to bow tie, they’ll be able to complete the look in one stop.

Pinup Girl/Playboy Bunny If you’ve got it and are in the mood to flaunt it, being a vintage pinup girl or a modern Playboy bunny could be the costume for you. All it takes is a trip to the giant Hustler store on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. The store is known for being a sex shop, but it is also full of fun and flirty costumes and props. Grab a corset, a tutu and some bunny ears and you can look ready for the cover of Playboy. Or go vampier with corsets, sky-high heels and sultry makeup to be a pinup girl. French Maid is another great, traditional Halloween costume that you’ll be able to find at Hustler.

80s American Apparel, home of the endless neon, is conveniently located right on the corner of Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards in West Hollywood. Stop in and have fun making the craziest, brightest costume you can think of! From neon leotards to shiny gold lame dresses, funky patterned tights, colorful accessories and sparkly bandeaus, you’ll be sure to relive the greatest decade in style (whether or not you were actually around for the 80s).

Rock Star Where better to find an authentic rock star outfit than on The Sunset Strip, a birthplace of modern rock ‘n’ roll? After seeing your favorite band play a show at The Roxy Theatre, purchase one of their tshirts (autographs add even more authenticity!) Pair with a pair of distressed jeans and your favorite worn leather jacket, add lots of hairspray, and you’re good to go (and made a great concert memory too).

Athletic Trainer If you’re hitting up the annual West Hollywood Halloween street carnival, you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. You may as well dress for it by being an athletic trainer for Halloween! LASC on Santa Monica Boulevard is the place to go for workout gear that is both functional and sexy. Show off what your mama gave you (or what you worked really hard for at the gym) in little shorts and colorful ripped tanks, and accessorize in funky armbands and sweatbands. You can even run off the alcohol and candy calories when the night is over!

Vintage Dressing up like the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s is super fun and always a classic choice. But there’s no need to bug Mom and Dad for their old clothes – head to Sielian’s Vintage Apparel in West Hollywood instead. This boutique features vintage apparel and designer resale clothing and accessories, all at a great price. Everything has been freshly dry-cleaned and is in great condition. Even better, when someone asks you where you got your costume, you can truthfully say that it lived to see the decade you are dressing up as!

Other Great Costume Resources Aahs!

Aahs! serves as a novelty joke and gift shop most months of the year, but every Halloween it transforms into a huge Halloween store, full of costumes, props and costume makeup! Bill Hargate Costumes Bill Hargate was an award-winning costume designer who dressed stars in TV shows such as the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Murphy Brown. Although Hargate has since passed, his design studio continues to create wonderful designs. Even better, the Formosa Avenue studio is open to the public and features complimentary public to make your shopping trip as easy as possible. Halloween Adventure This Halloween-time-only pop-up shop is conveniently located on Sunset Boulevard. It features racks upon racks of costumes for men, women and kids, so you’re sure to find something for the whole family in one trip. 8801 Sunset Blvd. 310.855.0235 Tags: halloween , Shopping
