When working families have it tough, Tammy Duckworth leads by example. “Duckworth returns pay to reflect sequestration cuts” (4/4/13)

For Tammy Duckworth, leading by example meant serving her country, and cutting her own pay when Congress slashed funding for Illinois families.

Lots of people talk about leadership. Tammy Duckworth leads by example. In 2004, Captain Tammy Duckworth was copiloting a Black Hawk helicopter in Iraq when a rocket-propelled grenade tore through the cockpit, costing her both of her legs and part of her arm. After recovering, she devoted her life to serving Veterans. When working families and local communities across Illinois were facing devastating cuts

during the sequester, Tammy Duckworth returned more than $10,000 of her salary to demonstrate how much these cuts hurt, the first member of Congress to do so. When Republicans shut down the government, Tammy sponsored the No Budget No Pay law that says Congress should not get paid until they pass a budget. Tammy also has returned over $200,000 from her own office budget.

Families have a champion in Tammy Duckworth. Tammy used Pell Grants and worked as a waitress to pay for college, and eventually got her Master’s degree and a Ph.D.

Tammy Duckworth knows seniors like her mom who paid into Social Security and Medicare have earned a secure retirement.

In Congress, she fights to make college more affordable and for middle-class tax cuts so everyone has a chance to get ahead.

That’s why she opposed Republican attempts to privatize Social Security and turn Medicare into a voucher plan.

Tammy Duckworth was a member of the Army National Guard. Use of her military rank, job titles, and photographs in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Army or the Department of Defense.
