Surrey Street Primary School LEARNING LOG POLICY 2015-2016

Rationale The Learning Log is a snapshot of the children’s work throughout the year. It is a way to share each child’s learning and progress. It should be seen as a way not only to show academic achievements but all achievements both inside and outside school. The Learning Log is a three way partnership. It should be a point of discussion at school and at home, and a way for parents to praise their child. Each child should feel a sense of pride in their work.

Responsibility of the Child  Complete the Learning Log every week Take pride in the content and presentation of your work  Show your Learning Log to your parents and discuss it with them 

Responsibility of the Parent Value your child’s Learning Log by sharing the contents with your child  Add your own comments on a sticky note if you wish 

Responsibility of the Staff 

Value and share the Learning Log

Show good examples of the children’s Learning Logs to the class each week

Celebrate successes both in and out of the school

Learning Log Format Year 1 children from the spring term should be given 1 Learning Log objective per week. Years 2,3,4,5 and 6 children should complete 2 Learning Log objectives per week. One of the objectives should be on either numeracy or literacy. The other objective can be on any topic being covered during that term.

Marking of Learning Logs Learning Logs should be marked by the class teacher with a stamp each week. Teachers should make a comment in the Learning Logs at least once a month. Learning Logs should be awarded house points in the following way: 

3 house points for outstanding Learning Logs: information and presentation.

2 house points for good presentation and information.

1 house point for Learning Logs completed to a satisfactory standard.

If Learning Logs are not completed or submitted late this should be noted on the Learning Log register. If Learning Logs are completed incorrectly, this should be pointed out to the child so that they can rectify it. If a Learning Log isn’t handed in on time or at all, the class teacher should speak to both the child and the parent. If a Learning Log is not completed 3 times in a half term, the phase leader will speak to the parent and discuss measures to ensure the child completes their Learning Log. All year groups should provide a Learning Log club.

The monitoring of Learning Logs This will be undertaken termly by the Learning Log subject leader.
