Attendance: Ann Hinsdale-Knisel. Heather Franco, Sister Carleen Maly, Ruth Benge, Debbie Brighton, Cathy Chesher, Lauren Sugg, Julie Shoemaker, Eleanor Wollett, Stan Masters 

Decision was made by the Network members present to conduct a pilot summer reading/reading skills enhancement with 3-4 willing community partners. The suggested list of partners to contact by midJanuary to ascertain their willingness: o Boys and Girls Club o LISD Career Camps ( 2nd Grade offerings) o YMCA o Sports Camp of some sort

 

Stan Masters agreed to design a simple assessment tool for this pilot. The pilot goals will be to: o increase reading enjoyment o increase reading comprehension o encourage positive reading interaction for children with an adult o increase skills in retelling stories o increase vocabulary



Timeline: o January 2016:  Ann will confirm partners and define number of students to be involved in each pilot  Ann will discuss with Kyle Hoffman possible funding sources for purchasing between 6-8 paperback books to give to student participants  Define number of volunteers that will be needed for each of the 3-4 locations  Network Members will suggest age appropriate books (K-2nd grade or third grade) and send suggestions to Ann  Network Members will suggest questions to be printed on a bookmark both in English and Spanish for use by the Volunteers to foster reading comprehension o In late April and early May:  Siena Heights Students will offer a training for the selected volunteers



The group decided to invite Chelsea Samples-Steele, MSU, to present information on the research being done in Jackson County on the Imagination Library.
