Attendance: Ann Hinsdale-Knisel (LISD), Meiko McDaniel and James Seaton (Boys and Girls Club), Stacy Gamel (The Centre), Sue Smith (YMCA), Casey Muck and Audrey Wegner (LISD Career Camps), Eleanor Wollett (Siena Heights University)
The “team” introduced themselves
Ann reviewed the Lenawee Cradle to Career Partnership and the creation of this pilot reading program for summer 2016.
Details on each Partner’s Summer Programming: o Boys and Girls Club: Runs June 20 – August 26 ; 40% of students come 2-3 times a week.; 6 yrs. olds are in a group (25). o LISD TECH Center Career Camp: 20 students, 6-8 yr. olds. 2 different camps (one week camps) with 20 in each camp. 9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. is the camp day schedule. o YMCA: Could have up to 60 children (20-25 Kindergarten; 20-25 1st – 2nd Graders) that could be divided into smaller groups. Starts at 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 PM o The Centre: Camp between 8 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Kindergarten and 1st Grade= 40; 2-4 grade =40;
Volunteers: o Boys and Girls Club - will assign one staff person to work with small groups and a couple of volunteers o LISD TECH Center Career Camps - Casey, Audrey, plus 2 Volunteers o YMCA - need volunteers, but would have some staff o The Centre - children are in PODS = 1 adult to 7 kids, so staff would be available
To teach THE COMPREHENSION SKILL the Volunteer/Staff person would: o Ask questions about the book before adult begins to read … example: what does student think will happen in story? o Child does a “ re-telling of the story” with a partner o Use a magnet board; child puts the magnetic characters from story in order o Words are pulled out of story for vocabulary
Group asked Eleanor to have Siena Heights University students help with book selection; sites will share what themes they are using each week at our next meeting. Stan Masters will join us and discuss evaluation tools plus data sharing agreements. Next meeting: March 9, 2016, 1:00 p.m.., LISD Education Service Center, 4107 N. Adrian Hwy (M-52), Adrian
