Urban Agriculture Certificate Program Introduction  In the Spring of 2017, Virginia State University (VSU) launched a 10 weeks Sustainable Urban Agriculture Certificate Program.  The program was developed out of the need to address the food deserts situation in Virginia by equipping Extension educators in the area of urban agriculture.  The program is supported in part by the USDA/NIFA grant # 2015-3882124339 Entitled “From Food Deserts to Agrihoods: Transforming Food Insecure Neighborhoods with Comprehensive Urban Agriculture Education.”

Urban Agriculture Certificate Program Target Audiences  Extension Agents at VCE and Small Farm Program  Master Gardeners  VSU students  Project managers at nonprofit organizations  School teachers  Urban farmers and gardeners  Other Stakeholders.

Urban Agriculture Certificate Program Program Structure  The topics covered include:

 General principles of urban agriculture;  Permaculture;

 Urban agriculture business and entrepreneurship;  Pest and disease management;  Indoor production, hydroponics and aquaponics systems; and  Animal Husbandry, among other topics.

Urban Agriculture Certificate Program Program Structure  The program includes:

 10 weeks of class instruction;  hands-on outdoor and greenhouse sessions;  80-hrs apprenticeship; and  30-minutes seminar themed around the apprenticeship experience.

Urban Agriculture Certificate Program Spring 2017 Class  The first class began on March 11, 2017.  27 participants enrolled.  A survey was issued to 22 of the 27 participants.

 Responses were recorded on a Likert Scale.
