Scripture references: Genesis 28:10–19; 32:1–32; John 1:11,12; Romans 8:15–17; 2 Corinthians 5:17 In Jacob’s early years, he proved to be a deceiver, just as his name meant. But everything changed when he met God one night.

1. The Change Begins Knowing that Esau was angry with him for having stolen his birthright, Jacob left his home and went to the land of his uncle Laban. On the way there, he stopped to sleep at a place called Bethel. There he had a dream of a ladder reaching to heaven. Angels went up and down the ladder, and God himself stood at the top. In the dream, God told Jacob He would give him all the land on which he was lying and that all nations would be blessed through him. This was the same promise God had given to Abraham. Since Jacob received his older brother’s birthright, he now received the promise. BFP: 55

2. A New Man Just as God promised, Jacob was greatly blessed. After twenty years, he had so many sheep that he had to leave his uncle Laban’s home. One night while he was traveling, God came to meet him. Jacob wrestled with God, who had come in the form of a man. Jacob pleaded with the Man not to leave him until He blessed him. God responded by giving Jacob a new name. No longer would he be called the deceiver; now he would be called

JACOB BECOMES A NEW PERSON Israel, which means “he struggles with God.” Continuing on his way, Jacob got a report that his brother Esau was on his way to meet him. Jacob was no longer the deceiver he had been the last time he saw his brother. When he saw his brother this time, Jacob’s attitude was different. He offered much of his wealth to his brother Esau and asked his forgiveness. Esau had also been blessed by God, and he willingly forgave Jacob. BFP: 57

3. New Creations Jacob became a new man after he met with God. We too can become new creations when we meet with God. When we ask His forgiveness, we can be born again. To be born again means to be made new, to be a new person, to have our spirit regenerated by the Spirit of God. We have a new nature. In the Old Testament, children inherited the rights of their parents, as Jacob inherited the promise God had made to Abraham. Once we are saved, we are adopted into God’s family and are given all the rights and promises of being a child of God. Jacob deceived his father in order to inherit his brother’s birthright. Today, anyone who believes and receives Jesus as Savior can become a child of God. We will inherit the promise God made to Abraham just as Jacob did. That promise includes freedom from the curse of sin and death, and eternal life with God in heaven. BFP: 356, 367, 482
