CROSS-COUNTRY MOVE
Credit Check – Often moving involves applying for credit, review your report to ensure no identity theft.
Utilities – Create a list of utilities to turn off at your current location and on at your new one.
Moving Expenses – If your move is work related, track moving expenses for potential tax deductibility. Contact a tax professional to determine what might be deductible. Change of Address – Start keeping track of all mailings 90 days prior to a move to notify individual organizations of your new address. Also notify the U.S. Postal Service. Change of Email – If you have been using an email associated with a local ISP (@myserviceprovider.com), consider changing to a web-based email (@yahoo.com, @gmail.com, etc.) so friends, family and acquaintances may keep in touch. Local Laws & Restrictions – If you own a gun, exotic pets or have children with special needs, check on potential requirements and/or special services available. Document Changes – Here are some items you will most likely want to update upon moving to your new location: o Drivers Licenses o Will, Health Care Proxy, Power of Attorney o Banking relationships o Auto/Home/Umbrella insurance
IRA Withdrawals – If you are taking money out of your IRA and currently have state taxes withheld, determine if that should be changed based upon your new state of residency.
College Savings – If you are moving to a state with higher state income tax rates, consider looking at your in-state 529 plan for possible tax deductions.
