Words Can Dig Deep Holes| Ryan Frank | February th, 2017

At Involve Church, you're likely to hear us talk about a few important concepts we call our Core Values. They define who we are and prioritize our time, energy, and resources. You will find each of our Core Values below along with some follow up questions that pertain to this week's talk. Life Groups meet during the week to discuss these questions and encourage one another in their relationship with Jesus. Life Group Discussion Guide Talk Title: “Words Can Dig Deep Holes”

Daniel 6:11-18 Authenticity | Making it Real Darius realized how foolish and rash his decree was in verses 13 and 14. He tried to find a way to take back what he had declared but by law he couldn’t. It’s easy to say things we regret. Can you recall a time in life when you said something you regretted? What happened?

Cultural Relevance| Bridging the Gap

What is Bridging the Gap? The Words of the Bible were written in a time and culture that is much different than ours. The principles of the Bible are timeless, but the background, style of writing, and flow of thought is often much different than today. It's always a good idea to ask the question, "What did this portion of the Bible mean to the people it was written to?" Once you've answered this question you can draw out principles that apply to our world today.

It’s amazing to me, and probably for you too, that Darius couldn’t take back what he said. Is that a sign that our culture is fickle today? It seems like people will say one thing one day and something completely different the next and somehow that is completely normal. Read Matthew 5:33-37 and James 5:12. What does God say about the words wee say? How does this affect what you say to people?

Discipleship| Asking the Tough Questions Read James 3:1-12; Proverbs 15:1-4; and 1 Peter 3:8-12. In your group discuss what kind of impact the tongue can have on people. Just be careful what you say ͹ .

Evangelism| Reaching Our Community During the talk, you were asked to write down 5 phrases that would impact and encourage a co worker, neighbor or friend. Share some of the phrases you wrote down.

Multiply | Reproducing Our Faith Do you know someone who struggles to say things that are helpful and encouraging? How can you come alongside them and help them? What are some passages you could share with them? Do you have some examples that would help them understand the importance of using kind and gentle, but truthful words.

Service | Serving Our Church and Community The church has a reputation in the world as being judgmental. Can serving our community help reverse that stigma? How important is it that when we serve we also speak words that bring hope to people? Why?
