Linda Christine Byron August 13, 1943 – July 8, 2016

For those of you who might have lost touch with Linda through the years, I wanted to share some of the highlights of her life from the mid 1990’s through the present time. After my retirement from the Army in 1994, we began spending long weekends at the beach, finally moving there in 1995. In Myrtle Beach, Linda formed a close friendship with Rachel Broadhurst, a real estate broker and owner of her own company. With Rachel’s encouragement, Linda became a licensed agent and had several successful years in beach property sales. Rachel and Linda even did a Saturday morning radio show focusing on the local real estate market. Many of her clients became her, and our friends. The beach years were good years, but in 2006 with lots of family events happening in Fayetteville, and both of us ready for a change of scenery from the beach, we returned to Fayetteville. 2006 brought the marriage of daughter, Letisha to Matthew Vaughn. On August 24th, granddaughter, Melinda gave birth to great-grandson, Tristan, a huge day in Linda’s world. Tristan would be the apple of her eye and a source of pride as he grew and progressed through school with excellent grades. Linda never stopped smiling around Tristan. 2007 brought a late fall vacation to Germany and Italy to revisit some of the locations where we lived and visited during my final overseas assignments while in the Army in the early 1990s. Linda loved Europe and we traveled extensively when we were stationed there. 2007 was also the years when our nomadic instincts surfaced again, and we made several trips to Washington, D.C. to visit art museums and to attend live theater productions.

Since we liked Washington, why not live and work there? So I applied for a security position with the National Gallery of Art in the Fall of 2007 and accepted a position with them in January of 2008. Linda attend the University of the District of Columbia and completed her training as a certified nursing assistant. Linda worked 20 hours a week as a home health aide for a partially disabled lady with whom she formed a truly close relationship. They maintained contact with each other after we returned to Fayetteville. Linda also worked as a Exhibition Aide for the National Gallery for special exhibits. Art museum visits throughout DC and Baltimore, as well as live theater performances occupied our free time. Linda loved making lists, including a list of plays we attended in DC. When we left to return to Fayetteville in May of 2010 there were some 30 plays on that list. After we returned to Fayetteville, Linda’s life revolved around family and the friends she made at For Woman Only Spa. After the spa’s untimely closing in 2015, a sizable group of members (approximately 20) met once a month for a luncheon at a rotating group of restaurants. Linda really enjoyed those luncheons and the a friends she made at the spa. Linda and I enjoyed attending productions at Cape Fear Regional Theater and Gilbert Theater, as well as art exhibits locally and in the Southern Pines area. Linda’s final months were hard, but provided her with the time to reflect on and reaffirm her faith in God. She also had an important and happy one week visit with her long-time best friend, Marti. Linda lived a full life, just not quite long enough for those of us she left behind. She left us painlessly and in peace, surrounded by family. She’s in God’s hands now.
