Seals Class Weekly News Friday 2nd October Maths learning: What a great week of mathematics learning! We have learnt that there are many different words we can use for the symbols we come across in a calculation, for example: +
-
means add, plus, more than, total and sum.
means subtract, takeaway, less than, and minus.
Can your child think of any mathematical words for the meaning of this symbol? = This week we have been exploring solving addition and subtraction calculations using a number line. We learnt that when we are solving an addition calculation the answer to the calculation will be greater than the two numbers we are adding together, which means we need to count forwards on our number line. However, when we solve a subtraction calculation we need to count backwards on our number line as our answer will be less than the numbers in our calculation. The children really enjoyed using this resource and solved the calculations brilliantly!
Literacy Learning: In literacy this week, we have been practising adding ‘s’ and ‘es’ to a word. For example, when you have more than one witch we add a ‘es’ to say, ‘I can see lots of witches’. We practised changing words from singular (witch) to plural (witches). To take our learning further we changed words from singular to plural and put that word into a sentence. We investigated how we could make our sentences more detailed by adding a connective, such as and or because. Here are some of our sentences using connectives: The witches are big and bad. ’ - Vinuga ‘The three boys are arguing because they want to have the watches’ - Athena

Theme Learning We have really enjoyed our thematic learning this week and the children continue to be so enthusiastic to learn all about the circus. This week we have explored the different characters that might be at the circus and created a freeze frame or a tableaux of a circus scene. We had to make sure our circus scenes showed the many different characters who perform at the circus. I was so impressed by the children’s amazing group work and freeze frames! We have also been investigating the different animals that perform in the circus. We practised our art and geography skills by drawing an observational drawing of a circus animal and finding where that animal comes from in the world.
Other learning This week we have been exploring a new virtue, which has been friendliness. We have spent some time as a class thinking about what friendliness could mean and how we can show this around the school. I have been very impressed by the friendly nature of Seals class and how well they have been showing this virtue. We have also been using a graphics programme on the computer called ‘2 Paint a Picture’ to draw very detailed pictures of a circus tent. The children used the tools on the programme to create different effects and shapes to draw an accurate and detailed circus tent. I was so impressed by how well the children’s computing skills are coming on! Señor Seal will be visiting….. This week Señor the Seal will be visiting Ananya. Well done for having such a great week Ananya and for all your amazing learning! Well done, Ananya!
