UPDATE FROM SILVERTONW CROSSING MEETING
Frances Renton and Paul McQuillen from Bexley Cyclists attended a public meeting in Greenwich about the Silvetown Tunnel crossing, in mid November. The Silvertown crossing is one of the serveral new proposed river crossing and TfL consulting on this crossing. We heard from Dr Ian Mudway of King's College London who researches the effect of air polution on human health and from transport expert Christian Wolmar. It has been known for more than 15 years that air pollution from cars, and or living near a main road has a detrimental impact on health. Yes this might be obvious, but it is something governments like to ignore. There is a growing body of evidence to indicate the detrimental impacts to health : much of the conclusive research has been done in California. It was assumed that the introduction of the low emmision zone in London would have delivered significant air quality improvements but this has not been the case due to the increasing number of diesel vehicles in London, Diesel vehicles are the main producers of N02 which causes smog and loads the air with tiny toxic particles that we breathe in. Dr Ian Mudway pertinently pointed out that the recent diesal emission testing scandal was quickly turned into 'consumer scandal' and not a pubic health issue.
Chris Wolmar pointed out that historically nearly all traffic improvement schemes have resulted in more traffic congestion within a fairly short space of time; he tsaid the local road network would have to be redesigned to accomodate the increasing traffic wanting to use the crossing ie this would be the start of a much wider road building scheme. It is proposed that the crossing will be tolled, but tolling is likely to ferociously resisted. Chris said the crossing proposals were reminiscent of the London plan that was partially implemented until thwarted by Londoners who started to have second thoughts about living in a spagghetti junction city. BEXLEYHEATH TOWN CENTER REVITIALISATIONS SCHEME Phase 2, Stage 2 In August 2015 work started on the second phase of a major scheme to revitalise Bexleyheath Town Centre. The work, funded by Transport for London, will be carried out in two stages. The second phase proposal relates mainly to Albion Road. Proposals include:
Improvements to the alignment of Albion Road from the new roundabout in front of the bowling centre to its junction with Gravel Hill. Realignment of Albion Road from the new roundabout near the bowling centre to its junction with Gravel Hill with improved provision and better access for pedestrians and cyclists to the town centre
Re-designed Albion Road/Gravel Hill junction and Watling Street/Erith Road/Broadway/Gra vel Hill Junction as roundabouts with signalised crossings to improve the pedestrian environment while smoothing vehicular traffic
Bexley Cyclists believe the proposals are an improvement on the current situation. To see the planning drawings, please go here: http://bit.ly/1MOHmB7
