LONE MOUNTAIN PHASE II, RUTHERFORD COUNTY Acres: 751 Acquisition date: 9/27/04 Partners: N.C. Natural Heritage Trust Fund, N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund. Purchase of this property expanded the South Mountains Gameland, and with South Mountains State Park, forms a large area of contiguous conservation lands. The entire tract helps to ensure ecosystem integrity of the area, and protects the headwater streams that flow into the Rutherfordton water supply. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will manage the tract for public uses, including hunting, fishing, hiking and nature study. EEP’s preservation efforts result from a partnership with the N.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. NCDOT is a major contributor of funding on this project.
