LOSS OF CONTROL—VOLUNTARY GLISSADE Alberta, Rocky Mountains, Mount Lefroy At 0745 on July 12, 1987, a clim ber (28) w as descending M ount Lefroy solo; the route w as the West Col via A b b o t’s Pass. At 3100 m eters, halfw ay betw een the first and second rock bands, he began to glissade and quickly gained speed. In an attem pt to self-arrest, he lost his ice ax and w as forced to use his forearm s, elbow s and feet as brakes. He finally stopped below the first rock band, after a fall o f about 100 meters. He suffered facial abrasions, severe forearm abrasions, bruised ribs, and stretched knee ligaments. A nother clim ber cleaned and dressed his abrasions, so he w as able to descend to Lake O ’Hara.
