February 19, 2014 The Family Address 1 Address 2 Dear Family: As your Delegate, also representing Naval Air Station Oceana, Dam Neck, and NSA Northwest Annex, I would like to update you on current legislation that is of interest to veterans, our military members, their families, and supporters. Being the son of a U.S Marine, I have witnessed first-hand the sacrifices that our service members and their loved ones make. I strive to ensure that the General Assembly is doing everything in our power to make decisions that honor those sacrifices. The well-being of the military community is essential to the health of our economy and the Commonwealth as a whole. The House of Delegates is working toward making Virginia the most veteran friendly state in the nation by helping those who have served find good jobs and get the education and training that they deserve. We are privileged to have leadership in these endeavors from a four-star admiral with deep roots in Hampton Roads, the Honorable John C. Harvey Jr., U.S Navy (RET.). As the Commonwealth’s new Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security, the former commander of U.S Fleet Forces is an extremely valuable resource for our legislature and military community. A substantial part of the bills we will be voting on are framed to meet the objectives set by the Joint Leadership Council (JLC) of Veterans Service Organizations. The top priorities for the JLC and House of Delegates during the 2014 legislative session are strengthening the Department of Veterans Services (DVS) to make benefits more accessible to veterans and their families, and also to increase funding for the various programs we have to assist them. Many of these initiatives come in the form of budget amendments and are presented to the House Appropriations and Senate Finance Committees. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I urge my colleagues to pass these bills and support our military. One of the amendments I am looking forward to supporting will greatly increase funding for the Virginia Wounded Warriors Program and the AmeriCorps grant. I am also hoping to pass a budget amendment that continues funding for the Virginia Values Veterans program, which supports hiring and retention of veterans. For a complete list of the many significant pieces of legislation affecting veterans, please see the list I have enclosed. As the son of a U.S Marine, I understand many of the challenges you face; as your Delegate, I’m here advocating for the Commonwealth to protect and serve our military community as they have done for us. It is an honor to represent you and I thank you immensely for your service and sacrifice. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am here to help and serve you. You can reach me at my Richmond office at (804) 698-1081, the district office at (757) 426-6387, or by email at [email protected]. It is only by working together that we can keep Virginia a great place to live, work, and raise a family. Sincerely, Barry D.
