WELCOME TO THE JOURNEY! Thank you for choosing to worship with us today! As a church family, we are determined to come alongside of you to enable you to become all that God wants you to be. Every person’s life story is different but every life story has a purpose that contributes to making God’s church that much more relevant in this world. So no matter where you are in life right now, we want to help you figure out where you are in your journey with God. Hopefully you will find a place here to grow in your faith and serve our God together. Our mission is...

LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS, LOVE THE WORLD At the Journey, we are focused on making disciples, whose love for Jesus impacts their love for each other and their love for the world. Our vision is to be a multi-cultural, outreach-oriented, grace-filled church that has fallen in love with God, His Word, and with each other. A place where authentic and relevant praise happens naturally as an expression of our love for God. Where people are being equipped to grow into disciples of Jesus who are making an impact on the world around them.

SERMON OUTLINE

AUGUST 21, 2016

The Struggle is Real: Teachings from Psalm 23, part 3 Week 1… “The Lord can’t be our shepherd until the shepherd is your Lord.” Last week … “We need to stop gazing on what we think we want and need and we need to start grazing on what God has already provided for us.” Psalm 23:2, 3a… “He lets me rest in green pastures. He leads me to calm water. He gives me new strength.” In “Margin,” Dr. Richard Swenson writes, "Often used descriptors of our society include active, busy, driven, fatigued, tired, exhausted, weary, burnt out, anxious, overloaded or stressed. Seldom do you hear our society described as well rested. We are a tired generation, one of which hurry sickness has become a way of life. Our carburetors are set on high and our gears are stuck in overdrive. Our lives are nonstop. We have a hurry sickness in our culture." 1. Are you haunted by a fear that there are not enough hours in the day to do what you think needs to be done? 2. Do you find yourself nodding faster or using hand motions when listening to someone else who is talking slowly to encourage them to speed things up? 3. Have you ever pulled up to a stoplight where there was a car in each lane in front of you and you quickly evaluated which lane had the oldest driver in it so you could get behind the other car? 4. At the grocery store…if you have a choice between two checkout lines…do you start counting the number of people in each line and then multiply that by the number of items in their cart to see which line is faster? 5. And while you are in line…do you keep track of the person in the other line that would have been you?

6. Or…have ever counted the number of items in the person’s cart in front of you in the express lane to make sure they have 15 items or less? 7. Have ever thought about re-wiring your microwave because you thought it cooked too slow? 8. Have you ever finished getting dressed…brushed your teeth…put on your make-up or shaved while stopped at a red light? 9. And while in church…have you ever checked the time when the Pastor started preaching to see if the service was going to run late? Stephen Convey in “First Things First”, “People expect us to be busy and overworked. It’s become a status symbol in our society…if we’re busy…we’re important…if we’re not busy…we’re embarrassed to admit it. Busyness is where we get our security…it’s validating…popular and pleasing, and it’s also a good excuse for not dealing with the things that are most important in our lives.” Bill Hybels, “I was doing the work of God at a pace that was destroying the work of God in me.” First of all... “He lets me rest in green pastures.”

“A Shepherd Looks at Psalms 23”, Philip Keller writes, "I came to realize nothing so quieted and reassured my sheep as to see me in the field. The presence of their master and protector, put them at ease as nothing else could. Whenever I came into view, then my presence attracted their attention, the sheep quickly forgot their foolish rivalries and stopped their fighting." Bill Hybels, “Sitting down before our God with our calendar and a submitted spirit is one of the holiest thing we can do. He says putting together a schedule is not so much about determining what you're trying to get done, it's deciding who you want to become. Most of us sit down with a list of responsibilities and we try to cram everything that we need to do into our schedule but if we were to ask, who do I want to become over time? What kind of husband, what kind of father, what kind of friend? What is it that needs to be out of my schedule so that I could become that kind of person? What kind of space or boundary needs to be put into my schedule so the shepherd can do his restorative work in me?” Isaiah 30:15 (NLT), “This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.”

Secondly... “He leads me to calm water.”

Ruth Barton shared, "Ruth, you are like a jar of river water that’s being shaken. What you need to do is sit still long enough so that the sediment can settle and the water of your soul can become clear." Thirdly... When we allow Him to do these first two, then He says, “He gives me new strength.”

Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me because I’m gentle and humble in spirit and you will find rest for your souls. For the yoke I will give you is easy and the load I will put on you is light.” You have to come to Jesus…

Isaiah 40:29-31 (MSG), “He energizes those who get tired, gives fresh strength to dropouts. For even young people tire and drop out, young folk in their prime stumble and fall. But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don't get tired, they walk and don't lag behind.” Matthew 6:6, “Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and as honest as you can manage. And the focus will shift from you to God and you will begin to sense His grace.” Reflection... “This is what the Lord God says: I, myself, will search for my sheep and take care of them. As a shepherd takes care of his scattered flock when it is found, I will take care of my sheep. I will save them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries. I will bring them to their own land and pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines, and in all the places where people live in the land. I will feed them in a good pasture, and they will eat grass on the high mountains of Israel. They will lie down on good ground where they eat grass, and they will eat in rich grassland on the mountains of Israel. I will feed my flock and lead them to rest, says the Lord God.” (Ezekiel 34:11-15 NCV)
