Lutheran Women in Action continued
It takes more than a church disbanding to keep the women of Emanuel Lutheran, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, down! In an effort to revitalize their society, these women gathered together and put a new spin on Halloween with an LWML flair. “Trunk or Treat” is a unique way to allow children to trick or treat safely under the watchful eyes of their parents. They used LWML products as treats and displayed an LWML banner and a large mite box. As if that weren’t enough, they also created the large penny [photo above] to represent mites. Of course, the year on the penny was 1942 — the year LWML was founded. 26 S p r i n g

Minneapolis Metro Zone received an enthusiastic presentation by Michelle Gillard who with her husband, Rev. Mike Gillard, and two children, Evangeline and Amelia, has been serving to help grow congregations in Uganda and Sudan, Africa. The women of St. James Lutheran Church learned of the experiences she had with the Ugandan children. The Gillard family shared, “Praise God and give thanks for the fulfilling ministry experiences we’ve had in our first term. Praise God for faithful Ugandan and Sudanese co-workers.” Michelle and Mike returned to Africa in early November 2011.

Ida Mall The humility Alma showed could only have come from the Lord. When she could have easily told everyone what she had done, she remained silent. She let her writing do the speaking. Her spoken words in her books are a testimony to her love for the Lord. The words in a couple of the titles of her books could be used to speak of Alma — she was/is “special,” and she was/is “loved.” A humorous story: She was my roommate for my first meeting as a District President for an ILWML meeting. When I opened the door to our room at Concordia Seminary St. Louis and saw the
long row of cutout dolls lying on the bed, I wondered what we would have in common. Although we did not have cutting out dolls in common, we both loved the Lord and the LWML. It was my joy to have known and served with Alma for many years.
Gloria Edwards I do remember that she was always very kind, very humble, and very funny. She had a very quick wit and was just great with words. The last time I saw her was in NYC when she received a “Witness in the Public Square” award from the Atlantic District. Her response was, as always, kind and gracious, with a wonderful overlay of humor.
