Peaks in H im achal Pradesh. Indian clim bers continued to m ake many ascents. M ulkila 4 (M 4) was clim bed by an expedition from C alcutta led by G outam D utta. O n A ugust 22, D utta and R .S. Negi got to the sum m it (6517 m eters, 21,380 feet). This was probably the first ascent o f the peak by Indians. On the 24th, D utta and A .N . Sapru clim bed M 5 (6401 m eters, 21,000 feet). A nother C alcutta expedition was led by A m ulya Sen. A lthough they had perm ission for M 6 and M 7, they clim bed two other peaks. Sekhar D utta Chow dhury, Tarak Ranjan G hosh and Tapas K um ar Roy clim bed M 10 (5852 m eters, 19,200 feet) on July 16. A purba C hakraborty, D ipak B ose, Parijat C how dhury and Prodip Sarkar reached the sum m it o f M 2 (5832 m eters, 19,134 feet). M 1 (5730 m eters, 18,800 feet) was clim bed on Septem ber 3 by Ranjit B asum atari, N aren Jha, B uddhadeb K haklari and Satyendra Singh although they had originally hoped to clim b M 4. CB46 o r Akela Kila (6005 m eters, 19,700 feet) was ascended by clim bers from C alcutta led by Sandip Dey. O n A ugust 21, Snehasish and Susanta B hattarcharjee w ith Tek and A lam C hand reached the sum m it from C am p IV. In mid Septem ber, Savumoy G hosh, Bijoy G hale and D ebashish Nath clim bed CB 48 (5996 m eters, 19,672 feet) from the Kulti Glacier. M enthosa (6443 m eters, 21,140 feet) above the M iyar N ala was clim bed by an expedition from B om bay led by Ajay Tasker. Base Cam p was at 4400 feet and there were three high ones (C am p III at 5750 m eters). Tasker, V inay H egde and V. Shankar clim bed to the sum m it in ten hours on A ugust 21.
