Mab Lane Primary School
‘Only the Best’
Priorities for 2015 - 2016
Introduction As Head Teacher and Chair of the Board of Governors our aim is to see the school strengthen, year on year. We have a strong vision, key aims and core values, which are reviewed annually. The School Improvement Plan and priorities agreed by Governors, drive the school forward during the academic year. This leaflet outlines the overarching priorities currently in place. Reminder of our vision, aims and values
Our Vision – Only the best We wish to achieve being ‘Only the Best’ in teaching, learning, progress, attendance, behaviour – in all elements of school life.
Our short/medium term aim – to be judged as being solid ‘Good’ with outstanding features during our next Ofsted inspection and that all pupils have a really positive experience whilst in school, not just academically but emotionally and socially too.
Our values – These define the culture we have and they are Honesty, Helpfulness, Respect, Happiness, Positivity and Perseverance.

Our priorities for 2015/16 External inspectors say that our school has improved rapidly in the last two years. Whilst we are proud of that achievement, we know that there are further improvements we wish to achieve in our quest to be ‘Only the Best’. So what are our priorities for 2015/16? 1.
To actively promote the vision, aims, priorities and values of the school. It is really important that, not only do Senior Leaders and Governors agree on these, but all stake holders are fully aware of them and support them. Governors are actively involved in school on a regular basis, at times such as parents evenings, Christmas and Easter events, class assemblies, sports days and annual fairs etc. As Chair I hold responsibility for liaising with pupils and parents, this includes attending meetings of the School Council and encouraging representatives to present to the Board of Governors termly. We pride ourselves in being high profile and approachable and enjoy sharing what we are doing to continuously to drive improvements in the school.
2.
To continue developing a culture of high expectations and aspirations for pupils to achieve the very best they can in life. We are striving to raise pupils’ awareness of the many different types of employment/careers options available to them.

3.
To ensure governors have a clear understanding of how the core and foundation subjects are taught in school and what extra curricular opportunities there are for all pupils, such as after school clubs. The Deputy Headteacher presented a comprehensive curriculum overview to the Board of Governors in the autumn term.
4.
An essential priority for governors is to track the progress of all pupils to ensure that they reach their full potential. The Senior Management Team and Governors have worked closely together to devise a schedule of monitoring and evaluation and to scrutinise data regularly to ensure early intervention is identified where needed. Raiseonline enables an annual comparison between school and National figures and as soon as these figures are published senior management and governors carefully review the information and closely scrutinise any gaps.
5.
To ensure Governors have a clear understanding of what is actually happening in the classrooms. A key team of governors, with support from senior management, scrutinise pupils’ books, conduct learning walks, interview subject and aspect leaders e.g. SEN and Safeguarding and interview pupils, to check if appropriate learning is taking place and systems and practices are enabling all learners.
6.
To ensure that the school has a balanced budget and uses money effectively. We are currently working closely with the 4
Local Authority Finance Team and with Liverpool’s School Improvement Team to devise a five year financial plan to make sure that the budget is sustainable for the future. 7.
Pupil Premium, EYFS Premium and PE and Sports Premium are sources of funding which the school currently receives annually. The Board of Governors examine appropriate spending of these funds and the impact that spending has on pupil development. A review is then carried out to consider how effective the use of the money has been and consider any changes that could be made in the future.
8.
We feel strongly that early intervention is the key to enabling pupils to achieve as well as they can. There are three priorities we have for 2015/16 to enable this vital work to continue to impact on progress. The first is to develop further the provision for two year olds and investigate the possibility for 0 – 2 year olds. The second is to train support staff to be able to provide further reading intervention. The third is to introduce new ways of supporting personalised learning and mentoring.
9.
Senior management and governors recognise the importance of actively involving parents. A review of current practice, analysis of current surveys and informal opportunities to gain parent views will support further developments (see Engaging Parents).
