PREREQUISITE: (If any): working knowledge of most of your machine’s basic capabilities.
STUDENTS: PLEASE PURCHASE SUPPLIES EARLY! ITEMS LISTED FOR CLASS ARE REQUIRED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
Class Description: From the Magic Pattern book by Amy Barickman, you will create a dress using one of the six patterns in “The Dress” chapter that you like the best (Chapter 4, page 123). Select from Cecelia, Camilla, Charlotte, Chloe, Catherine, or Candace. You could also mix the features (The Camilla dress with the Cecelia belt and the Catherine sleeves, for example).
Supplies Required:
Printout of your pattern(s): o The CD in the book has each pattern in PDF format; you will print, cut (with regular paper scissors, not your fabric scissors!), and tape all the pages together, matching up the labeled diamonds—there are further instructions and diagrams in the beginning of the book for what to do. Then cut out your pattern pieces for your size (page 20 has sizing info) and roll them up or fold them for transport o If you plan to use elements from a different dress, have those printed and cut out also. For example, I printed, cut out, and taped the sleeve pattern piece for the Catherine and the body pattern pieces for the Candace. Dress fabric (pre-washed, dried, and ironed): each pattern suggests the recommendations for the type of fabric you should use and how much to get; refer to the pattern’s intro page in the book.
All classes, seminars, workshops and events require registration. Credit is issued to students canceling a week or more in advance of the class date. Credit is only issued in the form of store credit. Credit will not be given to students making cancelations less than a week in advance. Store credit or make up classes are not provided to no shows.
Zipper, elastic, hook/eye, bias tape, interfacing, safety pin, or any other notion that your particular pattern requires. Refer to the pattern intro page. Thread to match fabric (and for bias tape, if using; and for contrasting fabric if your dress pattern uses it). Office supplies: scotch tape, paper scissors, ruler, pencil RECOMMENDED: Once you are confident you know what size you are according to the book’s sizing information, go ahead and cut out your pattern onto your fabric to get a head start, so that you have more time in class to do the sewing and get help from me in the process. o Be sure to follow grainlines, selvages, and layout information for your pattern before cutting o Bring extra fabric to class just in case. o Read through your dress’s instructions to see if you will need to cut out bias strips from your fabric –do that at home before class also.
