10. Would you be prepared to be a part of the agency happiness pulse panel on an ongoing basis, to see how the industry is feeling?

No - 17% Yes - 83%

ADMA Agency Experts’ Opinions “Find yourself a job you love and you’ll never wok another day.” Wise words from Confucius, and based and on these results it appears our industry is brimming with people who love what they do.

Alex Caredes BMF

With over 80% of respondents more than likely to recommend working at their current agency to family of friends, it is clear that Agencies and Marketing teams are focussed on making work more enjoyable for their staff. And with almost nine out of ten respondents agreeing they have are achieving a sense of personal accomplishment from their work, it goes some way to proving the age old adage that when we are happy, we are also more productive.

It's human nature to complain about what's not going right. So based on water cooler conversations with colleagues, it's tempting to assume many people are dissatisfied. But the results of the poll show this is not the case.

Liz Kain MercerBell

82.5% of respondents indicated they'd be likely to recommend working at their agency to friends or family. And the majority of people are satisfied with their agency employers across the board. What's more, over 68% of respondents have been in the industry for more than 5 years – a time when you might expect a certain level of cynicism to be creeping in. Yet the tone of these results is very positive. Of course there is room for improvement – 36% felt morale in their team was not improving and 12 percent were actively looking for a new role. But the majority of people were satisfied with agency life. And importantly for the panel, 83% of respondents were happy to participate in our poll again.

Are we a happy bunch (or just getting pragmatic in our old age)?

Simon Bloomfield Ogilvy

There were some really interesting results in the survey, which showed that on the whole, people are relatively content in the roles they currently hold. Even areas that are typically poor - performance feedback and remuneration are at a good level. And in industry where churn can be upwards of the 30%, the fact that only 12% of respondents are actively looking for a new job is particularly surprising. Perhaps its the cynic in me, but it all makes me think that rather then being happy, we're all just resigned to the fact that in the current economic climate, we're probably in as good a position as we're likely to be. And as such, it's best that we just sit put.

I am a natural born cynic and must admit the results surprised me. With friends in many agencies across the city, the poll does not echo the anecdotal stories I am told. This is a good thing and perhaps people just like to complain? The hours, the clients, oh I hate my agency etc. Maybe deep down we are all glutens for punishment and do in fact love our crazy industry. Rebecca Masterson Friend

I was most surprised that only 12% of those polled are actively seeking a new role – almost every one I know in the industry claims they are looking. Willingness to recommend the agency was also remarkably high and bodes well for our industry as a whole – surely recommending and suggesting people join where you are is one of the greatest endorsements you can have.

The Agency Expert Group is focussed on how agencies can remain at the forefront of marketing and continue to provide the creative, media and digital cut-through that has shaped some of the best campaigns in the world. A key concern for this group is people and how to retain and enrich the careers of the people who are driven by creativity and effectiveness. http://www.adma.com.au/members-hub/expert-groups/agency/
