If you are in a spring sport or have a conflict with the tryout time please contact Coach Nanette to workout out a Tryout Time. Who is eligible: Any student (male or female) who is currently in 8th – 11th grade. No experience is necessary to try out. We will teach you everything that you need to know. You will learn motions, jumps, a cheer and a chant. Tumbling is not required, but always welcome. What to wear: Tee shirt, shorts, tennis shoes that can be tied tightly, hair pulled back in a ponytail. You are trying out for an athletic activity and must be dressed so that you can participate as an athlete. You may also bring water to drink during the tryout. What not to wear: Jewelry, artificial fingernails/long fingernails, street clothes, street shoes. No gum or food is allowed during the tryout sessions. What to Bring: The attached forms signed by you and a parent, a good attitude, and a desire to work hard. We suggest you bring water to drink.

Our tryout session is four days long, with three days spent on teaching and the fourth day is an actual tryout in front of judges. Our tryouts are competitive and teams will be decided of skill and attitude. If you make the team, it is something that you can be really proud of. If you do make the team, please be aware of the time and cost involved. We practice twice per week for two hours. Practices and games are mandatory and we need for everyone to be fully committed to participating. Cheerleaders/ Mascot buy all of their shoes and body suit items. There is no school
subsidizing for free or reduced lunch students for cheerwear (only the activity fee) and no scholarships available. All fees are due at the Parent Meeting on May 9th at 10am. There will also be an option to purchase additional items such as poms, bow and team clothing. Please plan on payment in full at the time of ordering as I will not order anything that has not been paid for. ***Please talk to the coach if you have extenuating circumstances that prohibit you from paying up front. Do not let that be a reason you don’t cheer.*****

INHERENT RISKS OF CHEERLEADING/ MASCOT 2015 - 2016 Cheerleading is reasonably safe as long as certain guidelines are followed. At Hopkins High School, we follow the National Federation of High School Leagues Safety Rules and all stunting coaches are safety certified by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA), or supervised by a coach who is. But there is the inherent risk of injury as in any athletic activity. Cheerleading is an anaerobic/aerobic activity, which includes jumping, stunting, motions and tumbling. All physicals must be on file in the high school athletic office before you may participate in practices and games. Keep your coach informed of all injuries and/or chronic conditions. Although the probability of injury is minimized if you practice correctly, there is always the possibility of one occurring. Injuries that can occur in cheerleading include, but are not limited to the following: blisters, muscle strains, ligament strains, joint and muscle soreness, abrasions, contusions, stress fractures, broken bones, spinal cord injuries involving paralysis, and even death. However, if you take certain precautions the possibility of such injuries can be largely decreased. NEVER stunt or tumble unless a trained coach is present. Always practice in the presence of a qualified coach. Always warm up appropriately before cheering (practice and games). Do not attempt a stunt that you do not know how to perform safely, and that has not been approved by a coach. Always cheer in an area free from obstruction. Always use attentive spotters when stunting/ Do not stunt on uneven ground, wet surfaces, or concrete. Do not stunt in cold or rainy weather. Never talk, laugh, or mess around when performing a stunt. Report all injuries to the coach as soon as they occur. Follow all trainer and doctor recommendations. Lift weights to increase strength and guard against injuries. Always wear shoes and clothing appropriate for cheering. Never wear jewelry of any kind or chew gum when cheering (practice or games). Always have hair pulled back from your face and off of your shoulders (practice or games) Do not wear acrylic or any form of artificial nails. Keep nails cut short, below the tips of the fingers. Eat nutritious meals and get plenty of rest. Always ask for assistance or advice at any time.

Attendance is mandatory for all practices, regular and post season games, parades, events and clinics. Cheerleaders/ Mascot should arrive at all practices, games, events and clinics in uniform ready to go. 80% of your attendance points are required to letter. One attendance point will be awarded for each practice, game, event and clinic. Cheerleaders/ Mascot with less than 80% attendance may be moved to a different squad. One attendance point will be subtracted for an excused absence. Excused absences include, but are not limited to: Illness, Funerals, School Events resulting in a grade, Family Vacations, emergency or specialist doctor appointments. o All excused absences must be reported to the coach by a parent via phone, email or written note or it will be counted as unexcused. Two points will be subtracted for an unexcused absence. Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to: an otherwise excused absence that has not been reported to the coach by a parent; inability to get a ride; non – specified family emergencies or family events and not communicated to a coach by a parent; babysitting; vacations with families other than your own, detention or suspension from school. ½ point will be subtracted if you come late or leave early. This includes if you stay after school. ½ point will be subtracted if you are not fully dressed for practice or in your required uniform. Three unexcused absences will result in an automatic loss of letter. You also could be moved down one squad level. You must be at the regular practice prior to a game in order to cheer at the game. If you miss the practice before a game, you will sit the bench in full uniform and do a game analysis. Injuries: If you are injured and see a doctor due to your injury, you must be cleared by the doctor to return to cheerleading. Get a note from your doctor stating when you can return to cheerleading. If you have restrictions, you must work with the trainer and be cleared by the trainer to return to cheerleading. Injured Cheerleaders/ Mascot should still attend practice and games (in uniform) unless instructed not to by your doctor, otherwise it will count as unexcused (-2 points) You must be in school the entire day in order to participate. You cannot be late for school. If you are sick, you must have a doctor’s note in order to participate. If you have a question, please call the Activities Office. You must arrive at the designated time prior to a game or you will be counted as late. Being on time means being ready to cheer. Hair up, uniform on, jewelry off, and shoes on.

Cheerleaders/ Mascot are expected to treat coaches, other Cheerleaders/ Mascot, parents, faculty and administration, and fans with respect at all times, on and off the field. This includes but is not limited to speech, facials, gossip and social media. Cheerleaders/ Mascot are expected to abide by all school policies, safety regulations, athletic training rules and cheerleading policies. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will strictly adhere to the NHSF and MSHSL Safety Rules and Regulations. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will treat opposing school Cheerleaders/ Mascot, teams and fans with respect. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will not leave the grounds unless the coach grants permission and the cheerleader leaves with his/her own parents. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will not use vulgar language, profane, disrespectful or unsportsmanlike language or gestures at any time. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will encourage and uphold good sportsmanship on and off the field. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will only stunt and tumble if a coach is present. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will represent Hopkins High School and Hopkins Cheerleading in an outstanding manner at all times.
Academics: Cheerleaders/ Mascot are expected to put school first and take it seriously. Cheerleaders/ Mascot must be on track to graduate at all times. Cell Phones: There is absolutely no cell phone usage once practice or games have started. CHEERLEADERS/ MASCOT ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A LOCKER IN THE GIRLS LOCKER ROOM AND MUST USE IT DURING PRACTICES Transportation: Cheerleaders/ Mascot and their parents are responsible for transportation to and from the school. Cheerleaders/ Mascot will travel on district provided transportation to and from offsite events. Cheerleaders/ Mascot should be picked up as soon as games or practice are over. All Cheerleaders/ Mascot will ride the bus to and from athletic events unless the proper arrangements have been made by the practice prior to the event. Purchase/Refund Policy: Cheerleaders/ Mascot are responsible for purchasing and maintaining all of their own cheerwear/accessories. All items must be clean and in good condition or replaced. Any payments for cheerwear or for contracted services, such as camp, choreographers, or entry fees are non-refundable once they have been paid to the vendor/service provider, even if the cheerleader leaves the squad. No items will be ordered without payment and if items are not ordered in time for a performance, the cheerleader will not perform. The coach may decide to make late ordering the responsibility of the cheerleader. Failure to perform because a cheerleader does not have the proper attire will be unexcused. Any items still held by Hopkins Cheerleading at the end of the winter cheer season will become property of Hopkins Cheerleading. I have read and understand all of the policies and expectations. I understand that I am responsible for following these policies and expectations. I understand that these ruIes apply to all programs administered under the authority of Hopkins Cheerleading.
