PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame NOMINATION FORM Describe the Candidate’s performance, service, and impact made upon the Association, PGA Members, and industry through contributions and efforts to elevate the image of the PGA of America and its members.
Describe the Candidate’s leadership ability and how this Candidate has inspired PGA golf professionals. Gene C. “Bunny” Mason served in every capacity of leadership and volunteerism in the Pacific Northwest Section PGA. More importantly, he led the charge to develop the Education process as we know it today. He understood the wide disparity of how apprentices and younger professionals were being educated by their Head Professionals. It was his insight that led to the development of the modern PGA Business Schools. Instead of assistants being only trained by their Head Professionals (and reliant on their skillset and knowledge), Bunny developed the idea that the best and brightest should be brought in to one location and spread the knowledge and education to many. As the Chair of the National Education Committee in the mid-1960’s, Bunny worked passionately to make this happen. As a result, he won the National Horton Smith Award and the modern day Business Schools were initiated. Describe the Candidate’s contributions that have furthered the PGA of
America’s mission and promoted the growth, reputation, and character of the game of golf. Nobody in the Pacific Northwest has promoted the game of golf more than Gene C.“Bunny” Mason. Bunny pioneered group teaching as early as 1952 to adults and juniors. He developed one of the West’s most popular golf schools in the 1990’s at Black Butte Ranch, with over 200 students daily. He served in every capacity possible in the PNWPGA and Nationally as a District Vice-President. He was an accomplished teacher and player, winning the 1956 Oregon Open and participating in numerous Bing Crosby Clambakes as an invited professional from the Pacific Northwest. He was a staff member of the Teaching Workshop in Orlando, Florida in 1978. Bunny has designed over a dozen golf courses in the Pacific Northwest, promoting courses that anyone can play and are economical to build and maintain. He was a member of the PNWPGA Hudson Cup team (top 10 Professionals vs. top 10 Amateurs in the Northwest) 9 times and served as captain 7 times. He has taught over 25,000 golf lessons. He invented the Pro-Tater, an exercise and instruction tool. He has donated too many hours to count to the betterment of his fellow golf professionals in the Pacific Northwest and Nationally. Describe how the Candidate upholds the values of integrity, honesty, sportsmanship, and character.
Describe the Candidate’s impact made on PGA Members, the Association, and industry in the effort to uphold the PGA of America values of education, mentoring, player development, teaching, and playing.
List any activities the Candidate has been involved with in the community or with other golf associations. Bunny had a passion for junior golf and devoted many of his countless hours of contribution to get kids involved in the game of golf. Bunny was very involved in the Boys and Girls Club of Portland, Oregon. He created the Boys and Girls Club Chapman, a very popular Pro-Am fundraiser in the Portland area for 20+ years, raising money for the B+GC. He was very involved in the development of the Children’s Course in Gladstone, Oregon, and the City Kids Fishing Club in Portland, Oregon. Bunny Mason was instrumental in growing the game of golf in Central Oregon. He was also active in the Sisters, Oregon community and the Central Oregon Golf Community. List any other exemplary or historical achievements of the Candidate as a PGA Golf Professional. Bunny taught countless juniors to success both collegiately and nationally. His most prominent student was Dr. Mary Budke, NCAA Champion and US Women’s Amateur Champion in 1976. He was proud to be a member of the National Teaching Committee from 1987-1990. Bunny was a major contributor to the PGA Teaching Manual written in 1990. Gary Wiren is a protégé of Bunny Mason. In the January 1967 issue of the Professional Golfer magazine, Max Elbin is quoted as saying “I doubt that any member in the 50 year history of our Association has tackled a Committee assignment with as much vigor and creative intelligence. … It’s the contributions of members like Gene Mason who breathe vitality and purpose into the PGA.” Please include any additional information that will assist in the consideration of the Candidate as a possible inductee (up to 5 additional pages).
