Population Genetics Determining Inheritance 

Segregation principle o Gametes randomly receive one of adults two alleles on autosomal genes (equal probability) o Receive one of sex chromosomes (equal probability) Inheritance is INDEPENDENT – random sampling from each parent o Use Multiplication Law (for independent events)  Pr(A∩B) = Pr(A) x Pr(B) o WRITE DOWN WHICH LAW IS BEING USED

Calculating Allele/Genotype Frequencies (large scale population genetics)

Random mating  

.

Assumption that parents with random genotypes pair up o Also parents donate random allele from genotype Gives same result as sampling with replacement (infinite supply of alleles)

For frequencies, divide ‘n’ and ‘p’ both by ‘N’ o Can calculate var = np(1 – p)

Eg: suppose a new generation of N = 12 comes from a population with fA = 2/3. Find probability distributions of genotypes; probability of exactly 2 heterozygotes. Ans: NAA=Bi(12, (2/3)2); NAa=Bi(12, 2x2/3x1/3); Naa=Bi(12, (1/3)2); Pr(2 exactly 2 heterozygotes) = Pr(NAa=2) = 12C2 x (4/9)2 x (5/9)10 = 0.0365 2
