MAT-IDP690 Installation Guide

MAT-IDP690 Installation Guide (V2.0) Installation of this unit should be undertaken in conjunction with our Fleet Operations Manager.

1. Equipment List

• • • • • •

1 x Pole Star MAT-IDP690 satellite transceiver 1 x 8 metre, 8 core cable, 20AWG with halogen-free, flame resistant PVC jacket 1 x stainless steel mounting bracket 4 x M4 screws and self locking nuts 1 x 2 A fuse and fuse holder 1 x 1 g Chemplex 825® silicon grease

You will need to supply:

• •

24V dc supply Self-amalgamating tape

2. Safety Notice The procedures in this guide must be observed during installation, operation, service and repair of this equipment. Failure to comply with these procedures violates safety standards of design, manufacture and intended use of this equipment. Pole Star Space Applications Limited assumes no liability for the customer’s failure to comply with these procedures.

3. Unit Description MAT-IDP690 is an IsatData Pro satellite transceiver with integral GPS receiver. In normal operation, MAT-IDP690 sends periodic position reports via the Inmarsat satellite constellation to Pole Star’s web server.

4. Installation For reference, the dimensions of the mounting bracket are shown in Figure 5. 1.

Select a suitable location for MAT-IDP690 installation, taking into consideration the following:

MAT-IDP690 requires a clear and unobstructed view of the sky in order to communicate with the Inmarsat and GPS satellite constellations.

Obstructions within the look angle range (see Figure 2) are unavoidable in most marine installations. To minimise obstruction, apply the following rule: Safe distance = 29 x diameter of obstruction

Example: For a pole of 10cm diameter, the safe distance is 29 x 0.1 = 2.9 metres. This rule ensures that the obstruction covers no greater than 2 degrees arc.

MAT-IDP690 must be a minimum of 2 metres from any other communication system and further if possible.

MAT-IDP690 should NOT be in the line of sight of any high-powered transmission equipment such as radar scanners.

Do not install MAT-IDP690 in any area designated as a ‘hazardous zone’.

The length of the supplied transceiver cable is 8 m. If this cable is extended the total length should not exceed 30m.

2.

Select a suitable 24V dc power source.

3.

Remove the 2 A fuse from the fuse holder on the cable (store in a safe place).

4.

Securely fasten the mounting bracket to the vessel superstructure and mount MAT-IDP690 on the bracket using the 4 screws and nylock nuts provided. Use silicon grease to protect the connector pins, attach the connector to the base of the transceiver and seal it with self amalgamating tape.

5.

Run the 8-core cable from MAT-IDP690 to the 24V dc power source as shown in Figure 1.

6.

Connect the cable to the 24V dc power supply as shown in Figure 1.

7.

Replace the 2 A fuse in the fuse holder to power the unit up.

8.

When MAT-IDP690 is powered up, the LED will illuminate constantly (see Figure 4).

Figure 3 - Connections to transceiver 9.

Once installed, allow approximately 10 minutes for the first position report to arrive.

10.

Confirm that your Fleet Operations Manager (or Pole Star distributor/person responsible for the operation of the system) has received the position report. Note: A correctly installed MAT-IDP690 will work reliably at sea but it is important to be aware that when the vessel is in port there is an increased probability of communication problems. In a port there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources from both land and vessel-based communications equipment. High power VHF, UHF and microwave equipment can all cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large structures can also cause problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite.

5. System Operation and Maintenance MAT-IDP690 operates automatically and does not require any user intervention in normal operation. •

When MAT-IDP690 is powered up, the LED will be constantly illuminated (see Figure 4).

If the LED is flashing, please check your power supply is providing a constant 24V DC output.

If you have any problems with the MAT-IDP690, please contact your Fleet Operations Manager (or Pole Star distributor/person responsible for the operation of the system) giving details of the vessel name, ship owner/company, transceiver Mobile ID (see Figure 4) and the nature of the problem.

Note: MAT-IDP690 must NOT be painted as this may inhibit transmission/reception of satellite signals.
