Textbooks Elementary and Intermediate Algebra: Concepts and Applications (2 nd Custom Edition for San Diego Mesa College) by Bittinger, Ellenbogen and Johnson Geometry: Fundamental Concepts and Applications by Alan Bass

Other Materials 1. Loose-leaf paper and a three ring binder (for taking notes and organizing materials) 2. Something to write with (I recommend a pencil, with pens or highlighters for emphasis) 3. A straight edge (like a ruler or an index card) 4. TI-30X IIS calculator

Prerequisite MATH 038 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Level M30.

Advisory Completion of or concurrent enrollment in ENGL 043 and ENGL 048, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W4/R5.

Limitation This course is not open to students with previous credit for MATH 095 with a grade of 'C' or better.

Course Description Elementary algebra and geometry serves as the foundation for other math courses and is the first of a two-course integrated sequence in algebra and geometry intended to prepare students for transfer level mathematics. This course covers the real number system; writing, simplifying, solving and graphing of linear equations in one variable; solving linear inequalities in one variable; solving systems of linear equations in two variables; algebraic operations with polynomial expressions and factoring; functions; operations involving rational expressions and related equations; and geometric properties of lines, angles, and triangles. It is intended for students preparing for higherlevel geometry and algebra courses.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the relationship between the equation of a line, a table of values (solutions of the equation), and the graph of the line. 2. Factor polynomials using a variety of methods. 3. Use correct mathematical terminology to identify geometric shapes and their properties.

Student Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Apply the order of operations in simplifications 2. Translate verbal expressions into algebraic expressions, and simplify them 3. Apply properties of equality to solve linear and absolute value equations and related application problems 4. Solve linear inequalities in one variable 5. Identify functions, use appropriate function notation, determine the domain and range of functions from their formulas and graphs, and apply the algebra of functions 6. Identify the properties of a linear equation in two variables including the slope and intercepts; determine the different forms of the equation of a line; and graph lines 7. Solve systems of linear equations in two variables 8. Perform basic arithmetic operations with polynomials 9. Factor polynomial expressions using a variety of methods and solve polynomial equations by factoring 10. Perform arithmetic operations involving rational expressions and solve rational equations 11. Identify important geometric shapes and properties involving lines, angles, and polygons 12. Apply the appropriate area and perimeter formulas in application problems.

Homework Various homework problems from each section covered will be assigned and will be due at the BEGINNING OF THE NEXT CLASS. All answers can be found in the back of the textbook, and all worked out solutions will be posted to Blackboard (https://sdccd.blackboard.com). Your username is your CSID and the password is your date of birth in the format MMDDYYYY (unless you have changed it). It is up to each student to do extra problems for additional understanding as necessary. Questions can be asked by email and in class. An attempted problem showing work is much more useful than just saying “I don't get it.” Each missing homework assignment will lower your final exam grade by two points. Each incomplete homework assignment will lower your next test grade by one point. Late assignments will be accepted no later than the Monday after they were originally due and will lower your final exam grade by one point. Corrections will be accepted no later than the Monday after you receive the original assignment back.

Quizzes Daily in-class quizzes will be given on a pass/no-pass basis. Quizzes with 70% or more correct answers will be given FULL CREDIT. Quizzes with less than 70% correct answers will be given NO CREDIT.

Accommodations Students with disabilities or medical concerns who may need academic accommodations should notify their professors immediately. See the Disability Support Programs and Services website at http://www.sdmesa.edu/student-services/disability-services/. Test proctoring forms must be submitted to me at least one week before taking a test.

Responsibility to Add, Drop or Withdraw It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes which they are no longer attending. Students who remain enrolled in a class beyond the published withdraw deadline, as stated in the class schedule, will receive an evaluative letter grade in this class. If you decide to withdraw from this course, you are reminded to do so by the date listed above under Important Deadlines. Students will NOT be automatically dropped after the add/drop deadline due to excessive absences. Petitions to add, drop, or withdraw after the deadline will not be approved without proof of circumstances beyond the student's control which made him/her unable to meet the deadline. Lack of money to pay fees is not considered an extenuating circumstance. Students anticipating difficulty in paying fees before the add deadline should check with the Financial Aid Office about sources of funds or other alternatives for which they may be eligible. Expect “late” adds, drops, and withdraws to no longer be accepted. Please discuss your plans to withdraw from class with your instructors. They may have other options for you that may allow you to continue in class.

Classroom Behavior and Student Code of Conduct Students are expected to respect and obey the standards of student conduct while in class and on campus. The student Code of Conduct, disciplinary procedure, and student due process (Policy 3100, 3100.1 and 3100.2) can be found in the current college catalog in the section Academic Information and Regulations, at the office of the Dean of Student Affairs (H-500), and online at http://www.sdmesa.edu/college-services/site-safety/policy-3100.shtml. Charges of misconduct and disciplinary sanctions may be imposed upon students who violate these standards of conduct or provisions of college regulations.

Academic Misconduct See District Policy 3100, Student Rights, Responsibilities, Campus Safety and Administrative Due Process (http://www.sdmesa.edu/college-services/site-safety/documents/BP%203100.pdf) and District Procedure 3100.3, Honest Academic Conduct (http://www.sdmesa.edu/college-services/site-safety/documents/3100-3.pdf) for full details, but the succinct version is this: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Your grade in this class is based almost entirely on your quiz and test performance. If you are caught cheating on a quiz or test, your score for that quiz or test will be a zero. A zero grade will have a significant and undesirable impact on your overall course grade so... Don't cheat.

Instructor Absence (San Diego Community College District Policy) If neither the instructor nor a substitute appears at the beginning of the scheduled class time, students shall wait 20 minutes; if neither the instructor nor a substitute appears within those 20 minutes, students may leave the classroom.
