Multnomah County Animal Services Asilomar Statistics 2006 The mission of Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) is to protect the health, safety and welfare of pets and people in Multnomah County. MCAS is the sole public animal services agency serving the 700,000 people—and their pets, living in Portland, Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview, Wood Village, and all of the unincorporated areas. As the only public shelter serving Multnomah County, we have the responsibility to care for the lost, stray, abandoned, and unwanted animal in our community. Each year MCAS receives and cares for nearly 10,000 animals. MCAS is part of the recently created Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP). ASAP is a coalition of public and private animal shelters, and the veterinary medical community, in the greater Portland area dedicated to the shared mission to end the euthanasia of social, healthy or treatable dogs and cats in our local shelters by collaborating on spay/neuter programs, educational and outreach efforts, and the promotion of humane alternative for feral cats. ASAP has adopted the language of the Asilomar Accords to standardize the collection and reporting of shelter data. The Asilomar Accords were adopted in 2004 by animal welfare leaders from across the country. The Accords call for all organizations that shelter animals to use the same statistical record keeping. MCAS has collected and published our shelter data for calendar years 2006 and 2007. This data project was sponsored by a grant from Maddie’s Fund.
