Terry Burrows (115). • Pokes Strike Early Through 16 games, the 2017 Cowboys are 8-4 and have outscored opponents by 53 runs (143-90). McNeese has been especially potent early in games, outscoring foes 56-30 in the first three innings and have scored first in 13 of first 16 contests. • Gallier Named Louisiana Hitter of the Week McNeese senior third baseman Matt Gallier was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Hitter of the Week on March 8. The weekly honor was the first of Gallier’s career as he became the second Poke to earn accolades this season. Nate Fisbeck was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week back in February. Gallier went 10-for-18 (.556) with two home runs and nine RBIs in four games for the Cowboys last week. The Lake Charles native slugged .889 and drew one walk for a .550 on-base percentage in the week. His best performance came against ULM where he posted two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored while launching a home run and drawing one walk. He was the only McNeese batter to post multiple hits and RBIs in all four games on the week.

• About Houston Coach Todd Whitting Whitting became the eighth head coach in program history, bringing a solid resume as a coach and as a recruiter, roles he held for seven seasons at TCU and as an assistant at Houston from 1996 to 2003. During his career, he has been a part of programs that won 18 conference regular-season and tournament championships, competed in 15 NCAA Regionals, six NCAA Super Regionals and one NCAA College World Series. He also worked closely with over 80 drafted in opening section. During his coaching career, Whitting has coached or signed five First Round draft picks and 15 Major Leaguers including seven at Houston. Active this season are Michael Bourn, Jesse Crain, Matt Carpenter, and Bryan Holaday.

• Cowboys Shatter Record Books in 32-4 Win The McNeese Baseball team posted a night for the record books against ULM on Tuesday night as the Cowboys broke five team school records and one individual mark in a 32-4 win over the Warhawks. The 32 runs scored on 29 hits are both single game records while a 15-run fifth inning that added to the blowout win, also set a record. Individually, Ricky Ramirez set a new school record by scoring six runs in the game. That tied as the most scored by a player in a single game in the NCAA this season and is tied for most in a game by a Southland Conference player. Other records broken in the game included team game records of hits (29), RBIs (28) and total bases (40). The Cowboys’ 32 runs are now tied for the most scored by an NCAA Division I team this season.

• We Want A Victory... Preferably Against A Ranked Team! The Cowboys have had recent success against ranked programs under head coach Justin Hill. The Pokes have won six of their last eight games against Top-25 opponents including a 5-4 win over No. 6 LSU last week. Including last season, McNeese has taken down Houston, UL-Lafayette, LSU (twice) and Lamar (twice). • Ain’t Nothing But an RPI If the NCAA Tournament were to begin tomorrow, the McNeese baseball team would have a strong arguement for an at-large bid barring the Cowboys were unable to secure an automatic spot. According to the NCAA, the Pokes are ranked 37th in the College Baseball RPI. The ranking is the second best among all Southland Conference members and fourth best in the state of Louisiana behind LSU, Louisiana Tech, and Southeastern Louisiana. The Pokes also rank 36th in the WarrenNolan.com RPI and 37th in the BoydsWord.com rankings.

Individual Game Records: Runs Scored In A Game: 6, Ricky Ramirez Ramirez is first Cowboy to score five or more runs in a game since Deron Hofstetter scored five in 1994 Six runs are tied for most by individual in game in NCAA this season Six runs ties Southland record for most in a game

• Hill Reaches The Century Mark Justin Hill picked up his 100th career victory as a Division 1 head baseball coach in a 12-9 victory over Prairie View A&M on March 4. Hill became the sixth Cowboys skipper to reach 100 victories at McNeese. Others to reach 100 or more wins as a McNeese head coach are Hubert Boales (190), Triny Rivera (141), Tony Robichaux (263), Mike Bianco (100) and

• Nate Fisbeck Earns National & SLC Player of the Week Honors Sophomore Nate Fisbeck has been honored by Collegiate Baseball as a National Player of the Week following an impressive weekend on the diamond, the newspaper announced on Monday. The weekly national honor is the first for a Cowboy baseball player under the direction of head coach Justin Hill. Fisbeck was on fire this weekend belting out some of the most impressive numbers across the country with 11 total RBIs off of five hits, including a triple and three home runs, for a 1.231 slugging percentage. He was responsible for helping the Pokes to two of the three victories this weekend. His seven RBIs in Friday’s contest were the most by a Cowboy since 2001. The Woodlands, Texas native was also the first Poke to hit a home run in three consecutive games since Lucas Quary in 2015. Fisbeck was also named SLC Hitter of the Week on Tuesday. • Kober Named Preseason All-SLC Pitcher McNeese senior reliever Collin Kober has been named to the All-Southland Conference preseason baseball squad as a first-team honoree, the league announced Monday morning. Kober, a native of Lake Charles, was automatically named to the preseason list after earning all-conference honors in 2016. He continued to be the go-to reliever when the Pokes were ready to close a game last season. He closed the year with three wins and a 2.76 ERA in 42.1 innings. His nine saves ranked fourth best in the league while his four saves in conference play is listed fifth best among SLC relievers. He has 39 strikeouts against 10 walks in 18 appearances this season. He has held opponents to a .212 batting average and has combined for four shutouts. Opponents had only 33 hits against him while only having scored 13 earned runs. • Baseball Receives Votes In Preseason Poll The McNeese baseball team drew praise from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper who released its Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I preseason poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum, where the Cowboys are receiving votes. McNeese was just one of four Southland Conference

teams to make the list as Sam Houston State was ranked No. 23 while Southeastern Louisiana received a No. 36 ranking. The Pokes and Lamar each received votes in the preseason poll. With the release of its 2017 schedule, the McNeese baseball staff realized the strength of its schedule and Tuesday’s preseason poll proved more true. Twelve of the Cowboys’ 24 opponents are either ranked or receiving votes. McNeese will play a total of 25 games against ranked teams or squads who received votes. The Pokes will cross paths with two top-10 teams this season when they take on No. 2 LSU on March 8 and No. 7 Arizona Feb. 23-26. Other ranked opponents include No. 14 UL-Lafayette (March 28 & April 26), No. 23 Sam Houston State (April 28-30), No. 34 Tulane (March 21), No. 35 Houston (March 14 & May 16) and No. 36 Southeastern Louisiana (March 31-April 2). Of those receiving votes, McNeese will face Missouri State (Feb. 19), Louisiana Tech (April 5 & April 18), Rhode Island (Feb. 18), Creighton (May 12-14) and Lamar (May 18-20). • Two-Sport Athletes The Cowboys have two student-athletes that double as football and baseball players. Sophomore Austin Nelson not only plays for the baseball squad but is a tight end for the McNeese football team. Newcomer Grant Ashcraft has been a member of the Cowboy football team for two years before deciding to step back on the diamond, where he excelled in high school. • There’s No Place Like Home The home field has been kind to the Pokes in since the 1990’s. and the Southland Conference announced Wednesday. The game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch and will take place at the historic Joe Miller Ballpark on the campus of McNeese State University in Lake Charles. It is the second time in as many years that the Southland Conference and CST will broadcast the Cowboys from Joe Miller Ballpark. McNeese was part of the lineup last season as it battled league rival Southeastern Louisiana on the regional network. The McNeese-LSU series has been special to Southwest Louisiana and to the Lake Charles community. The rivalry holds four of the top five largest crowds to ever pack Joe Miller Ballpark including a record crowd of 2,285 in 2012. The last time the Pokes defeated LSU at home occurred in 2000 in front of 2,191 spectators. On-air talent will feature sports broadcasting legend Lynn Rollins on the call along with former LSU pitcher Ronnie Rantz as the color announcer and Carley McCord as the sideline reporter. The broadcasts are part of a multi-year agreement between the conference and network. Since its launch in 2002, CST has increased to nearly 5.5 million viewers, making it one of the fastest growing regional sports networks in the south. • A Look at the Schedule McNeese’s 55-game schedule features five home SLC series with Stephen F. Austin, Nicholls, New Orleans, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Lamar. Key nonconference games include mid-week contests against nationally-ranked LSU (March 8), UL-Lafayette (March 28) and Houston (May 16). Other notable home contests include the Lake Area Classic against Stony Brook, Rhode Island and Missouri State (Feb. 17-19), ULM (March 1), Prairie View A&M (March 3-5), Louisiana Tech (April 5), Alcorn State (April 11) and LSU-Alexandria (May 2). LSU is one of eight teams on the Cowboys’ impressive slate of contests who made it to the NCAA tournament in 2016. Of those eight squads, two (LSU, Arizona) won their way into a super regional while one team (Arizona) finished as the runner-up in the College World Series. • Squad Breakdown Among the 34 players on the 2017 McNeese roster, there are eight seniors, eight juniors, 13 sophomores and four freshmen. The squad includes 20 letterwinners and 10 newcomers. • Cowboys Across the Country The 2017 Cowboys hale from six different states across the country. Louisiana natives make up 13 of 33 players on the roster, while Texas has the second most representatives at 12. Other states included are Kansas (3), Illinois (2), Nebraska (2), and Colorado (1). State-Players Louisiana - 13 Texas - 12 Kansas - 3 Illinois - 2 Nebraska - 2 Colorado - 1 • Baseball Signs 2017-18 Recruiting Class The McNeese baseball team announced the signing of five players who will take to the diamond for the Cowboys beginning in the 2017-18 season. Four of the signees will come from the Lake Charles area as the Cowboys signed brothers Adam and Alex Goree of Barbe High School while Peyton Johnson and Reid Bourque come from Sam Houston High School. Connor Fontenot was signed out of Sacred Heart High School in Ville Platte. Adam Goree, a left-hander, as well as right-handed pitcher Fontenot will bring their talents to the mound

while Johnson and Bourque will play time in the infield. Alex Goree has been signed as an outfielder with the Cowboys. The Cowboy baseball squad continues to fill up on local guys as last year’s signing class had three of four signees who were from the state. However, the coaching staff was quick to point out that although there is talent all over the country, the mission is to recruit players who fit the program and will help preserve the legacy of McNeese baseball. • McNeese Picked to Finish Fourth in SLC The McNeese baseball team has been tabbed to finish fourth this season by the Southland Conference head coaches and sports information directors, the league announced on Thursday. The Cowboys are picked to finish fourth in the coaches poll behind defending SLC tournament champions and preseason favorite Sam Houston State, defending regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar. Following McNeese is Central Arkansas, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, New Orleans, Nicholls, Houston Baptist, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. In the SID poll, the Pokes were tabbed fourth behind Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar as Northwestern State rounded out the top five. • Former Poke Serving As U.S Secret Service Agent Having the opportunity to protect the leader of the highest office in the entire country is an honor that former McNeese baseball student-athlete Billy Sommers has been blessed to experience. Sommers, a native of Moss Bluff, La., was recently pictured as part of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s security detail following Tuesday’s election. Last fall, Sommers gave up his last season of eligibility as a member of the McNeese baseball team in pursuit of his dream to become a U.S. Secret Service agent. He was selected out of 75,000 initial applicants to begin the vetting process and passed all subsequent tests and interviews. He went through 13 weeks of training in Georgia and followed up with 17 weeks of training in Maryland at the United States Secret Service Academy. Sommers recently graduated from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers back in May and has been in active service ever since. Sommers, a three year letterman, finishes his collegiate career with a .287 batting average in 88 games. He accounted for 71 hits, 11 doubles, three triples and four home runs. He drove in 36 runs during his time with McNeese. Serving in the designated hitter spot, Sommers was honored on the 2014 All-SLC second team and was selected to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for this work in the classroom. Billy is the son of Bill, who played baseball at McNeese, and Belinda Sommers. • Southland Baseball Tournament Returns To Constellation Field The Southland Conference Baseball Championship Tournament returns to a neutral site in 2017 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters. The tournament will open Wednesday, May 24 and the championship game will be played Saturday, May 27.
