Hello Fellow Alumni, With the 2013 season already halfway over, we wanted to get back in touch to update you on our progess thus far, inform you of the plan going forward with the young boys and start passing along details that have been finalized for Alumni Weekend. On the field it has been a mixed bag for the young boys, playing some attractive possession football for stretches, but often not for a full 90 minutes. A set piece goal cost the young boys 2 points in Sudbury, tieing 11 despite late chances to grab all 3 points, setting up an important rematch on Homecoming Weekend. The next day the lads rallied with a 30 win and strong possession against a defensive Nipissing team to close out the Northern Road Trip. Upon returning home, the young lads hosted 7th ranked Ryerson and U of T. After a flat first 45 minutes that saw two first half goals by Ryerson, the boys were unable to find an equalizer that they probably deserved during a much stronger second half, dropping a 2-1 decision. After a “motivational” chat about the realities of what it takes to compete against top teams, the boys came back on Sunday and put together their best performance of the year in a convincing 3-1 win over U of T, conceding the consolation goal late.

Games at RMC and against Trent followed. In both matches the young boys struggled to create clear cut scoring opportunities as RMC ground out a 0-0 draw in a slow-paced, unfocused performance that saw the full 3 points slip away. The young lads switched to a 4-1-3-2 formation for the home match against Trent and created more scoring opportunities, eventually potting a late second half goal by captain Chris Michael for the 1-0 win. With 6 games to go, the young boys sit in 4th place in the OUA East with 14 points, 3 points back of LU and Carleton, but with a game in hand on the Ravens. Several injured players are set to return to the line up in the coming weeks with practices focused on quick combination play to create chances in the final third and the mental toughness and small details needed to grind out close matches. Lastly, if there are any Toronto based alumni around on the weekend of October 12th and 13th who want to see a game Queen’s play at U of T and Ryerson and alumni support is always appreciated on the road. We’ve already had a good response for Alumni Weekend, with over 20 people, representing teams from the 80’s to the present day, already confirming their attendance. If you are able to attend and have not already responded, please RSVP to Scott Compeau (contact info below) to help us prepare. Also, if you’re in touch with other alumni please pass along any information they may not be receiving and encourage them to join us for the day. Those alumni who are unsure if they will be able to make it or are on the fence, are welcome to join the festivities the day of. For those of you who placed an order the training will be ready for pick up on Alumni Weekend. As per our last newsletter, the plan during the day is outlined below. The young boys kick off festivities at 2:15 PM against Laurentian and the game will feature recognition of the 1993 OUAA Championship team, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their win. Please idicate if you were part of the ’93 team in your RSVP if you are attending. The Alumni Game will take place at 5 PM following the young boys game vs. Laurentian. Afterwards the locker room will be available for alumni to see the changes that have been made and clean themselves up before dinner.

After the Alumni game, a BBQ dinner will follow downtown at ~8 PM to allow incoming alumni more interaction with one another and current players. There will be a nominal fee (TBD based on numbers) to cover dinner costs, similar to when Alumni Dinner’s were held at a restaurant. Following dinner there will an Alumni AGM to determine Alumni leadership and generate ideas for funding and alumni engagement initiatives. Alumni social will follow. The itenerary for October 19th and specifics about the dinner will be included in our next newsletter, the week before homecoming. If you haven’t already and are able to attend please RSVP for Alumni Weekend to [email protected] and contact Scott or Michael Zanetti at [email protected] with any other questions about the newsletter, the squad or Alumni Weekend.
